–Umeh insists he’s acting president
By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:
The crisis rocking the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) took a new dimension yesterday with two presidents sitting in the office of the President at the Glass House secretariat of the federation at the same time, each with full load of their security personnel.
First to enter the office as early as 7am was the former acting president of the NFF, Chief Mike Umeh who was accompanied to the Glass House by Rumson Baribote, Obinna Ogba and Shehu Adamu. They went into the president’s office and according to sources, Umeh called for files but staff were hesitant.
At about 11.39am, Aminu Maigari stormed the office with a retinue of aides and two Hillux pick up vans and a peugeot car and went up into his office and took his seat as president while Umeh remained seated at the conference table of the office while some executive committee members also sat and watched the power show.
Earlier, Chief Umeh had told journalists who thronged the Glass House that there was no way Alhaji Maigari would return to NFF as president stating “Maigari cannot return as president because he had been impeached and cannot just come back like that. As far as I am concerned Maigari as president is in the past and (Sports) Minister cannot determine whether to vacate the impeachment or not.”
When Maigari came, he said he had come to resume as directed by FIFA and as agreed with the Minister of Sports and Chairman of National Sports Commission, Tammy Danagogo.
“I have come to resume work after we reached a peace agreement and I hope all will go well. We have to move on with our program,”he said.
Ironically, as soon as Maigari stepped into his office, he started treating files and it looked as if peace had returned. But Shehu Adamu the former acting vice chairman of the NFF told the media outside that Maigari would not survive the charges against him.
Maigari met Umeh and his allies who later left the office for both helsmen to sort things out between each other and after several hours of discussion, they arrived at a conclussion to hold an executive committee meeting Tuesday and Umeh was asked to brief the media.
Chief Umeh though refused to withdraw his earlier claim that Maigari was done as NFF president, he stated that the Tuesday meeting will determine whether peace had returned to the NFF. He would not however say who would preside over the meeting.
At precisely 4.10pm Maigari left the Glass House with a police orderly with the security operatives made up of DSS, Police and others with vehicle numbers; NPF 666 0C, RSH 591 AS and BD 78 AW on the tow. It was a clear evidence that Maigari was back but for how long?
When Umeh left at exactly 5pm he gave the impresion that the battle was far from over as he refused to talk and his countenance was that of a battle weary general. Can Maigari survive the onslaught or will Umeh succumb?
