Drogba Scores Wonder Free-kick In Phoenix 2-0 Win

Old warhorse Didier Drogba is showing no signs of slowing down after he scored a stunning free-kick for Phoenix Rising in a 2-0 win against LA Gallaxy II in the United Soccer League (USL) on Saturday.

Drogba’s 13th minute opener was followed by an Alexandro Riggi on the dot of half time for a comfortable victory which saw Rising move up to 10th on the log of the Western Conference of the USL.

Since joining the Rising as a player and co-owner in April, Drogba has scored four goals and the 39-year-old took his tally to five with a bullet of a set-piece to leave LA Galaxy's reserve goalkeeper Clement Diop helpless as the ball riffled into the top corner of the net.

Such was the quality of the goal that even the opposition sang Drogba’s praise, with Galaxy head coach Mike Munoz admitting they could do nothing to stop the Ivorian from set pieces.

He said: 'He was a world class player in his day, I thought we did a decent job in neutralizing him for the most part – but obviously the free kick was top shelf and sometimes you just have to tip your hat.'

LA striker Justin Dhillon added: 'He was a hero of mine growing up, I’ve always idolized him. There’s really nothing we can do about a free kick like that.

'To be on the field with a guy like that as another forward it’s just unbelievable. It’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.'

Drogba attained legendary status at Chelsea in England after helping them to four English Premier League titles, four FA Cup trophies, three League Cups as well as the prestigious Champions League.  He had previously played at Marseille, China and Turkey before going on to feature for Montreal Impact in the MLS.
