Ebola Outbreak Threatens Super Eagles, DR Congo Friendly

Ebola Outbreak Threatens Super Eagles, DR Congo Friendly

By James Agberebi:
The international friendly game between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo is in danger of being called off following a fresh outbreak of Ebola in the central African country.

Ebola is a deadly, fast-spreading disease that kills its sufferers in a matter of days. The virus spreads by direct contact with body fluids, such as blood, of an infected human or other animals. This may also occur through contact with an item recently contaminated with bodily fluids.

The Eagles are expected to face DR Congo on May 28 as part of their preparation ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

But according to BBC Africa, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced that it is taking swift action to make sure Ebola does not enter the country. This leads to the possibility of the game not holding in order to avoid the disease spreading to Nigeria.

Speaking on the outbreak, NIS spokesperson Sunday James told BBC Yoruba that immigration officials would tighten vigilance at airports and make more use of thermometers to screen passengers.

“We are sending a signal to all entry points in the country. The intention is to ensure that any suspected case can be promptly handed over to health officials at the airports. This is a matter which everybody must be concerned about. All hands must be on deck,” James said.

There was an Ebola outbreak in 2014 in West Africa which killed 11,000 people – mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The disease also spread to Nigeria when Patrick Sawyer, who was infected with the virus, flew into the country from Liberia.

Eight people died, including Dr Stella Ameyo Adadevo, who first attended to Mr Sawyer and helped to ensure a more devastating outbreak was avoided in Nigeria.

Human life is more important than football. Just cancel, and let the Super Eagles camp in the UK, play England and off to Russia. If they come here, and the Congolese bring Ebola, I imagine England will be wary of playing us. We may even be screened before entering Russia.

If we make the mistake to play DR Congo now we are taking a dangerous risk of not going to Russia. The match should be called off immediately

I totally agree with you amadi. Camp the SuperEagles in UK and play the two friendlies against England and Czech republic. Then off to Russia, there are millions of Nigerians in diaspora that will be with the team between UK and Russia.

I can almost guarantee that the SuperEagles will be screened out of Russia if we face the Congolese with this Ebola threat. The Oyinbo man would be more than happy to take the most drastic action to remove Nigeria from the competition, after all they are already palpitating and holding their breaths. Very wise counsel, indeed to avoid possible disaster.

Please,There is no big brother thing in this one! The Match should be cancelled immediately. Every hands should be on deck to ensure that that contamination is not brought here. We must not suffer for other peoples negligence or callousness period.

  • The congo national team is predominantly made up of foreign players,xo the game can still go on in as much as their local players are not added.

The major national team players of Congo DR are drawn from TP Mazembe and AS Vita. The match should be cancelled. The super eagles can play against CHAN eagles or NPFL best XI.

Until the World Health Organization (WHO), which actually has its Africa Regional Office in Brazzaville, Congo certifies the country Ebola-free, the Nigerian Immigration and Ministry of Health have no business allowing the Congolese football team, officials and supporters into Nigeria. The game should be postponed until after the World Cup. If we don’t take drastic and polite action now, I can understand other countries at the World Cup refusing to play Nigeria. Football is a contact sport with players exchanging body fluids – saliva, sweat, mucus, blood which carry the Ebola-virus. A word is enough for the wise, and the NFF must not bow to any official pressure from Abuja that the game must go on at all costs. In fact I can imagine our players abroad not showing up for this irrelevant match if it is not cancelled. There are over 40 other countries in Africa we could chose an opponent from.

I totally agree with you guys.. We have other options… The SE can play against the best NPL XI… There isn’t much different and I trust these guys will want to prove them self… Or else, we going to Russia is at risk.

The Suoer eagles are in camp now which indicates that the friendly match will definitely take place. There will be proper screening before players are allowed into the country for sure
