Echiejile Fit, Eager To Make Up For 2014 World Cup Miss

By Johnny Edward:

Elderson Echiejile says he has never felt stronger, fitter and more confident with the Super Eagles as he targets a second World Cup finals appearance in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The Super Eagles defender, 30, made five appearances for the Super Eagles during the qualifying series as they qualified for their sixth FIFA World Cup in Russia where they will face Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in Group D.

The AS Monaco defender who missed out on the last edition of the World Cup in Russia due to an injury said that the team’s training is gradually gaining momentum in Uyo.

“I’m having a great time here, working hard ahead of the World Cup,” Echiejile, who has battled with injuries while on loan at Belgian second division club Cercle Brugge, told CSN.

“Making the final squad will banish the horror of missing out on the World Cup in 2014.”

Referring to Nigeria’s forthcoming friendly against DR Congo in Port Harcourt, Echiejile said: “These friendlies will put us in competitive edge ahead of the first World Cup game.

“Congo are no pushovers, just like other teams we will face.

“They have great players and that’s important. We lost to them in Belgium two years ago and it will be nice to pay them back in their coin when we meet.

“We are looking forward to the game.”

Nigeria will also face England and Czech Republic in their remaining two friendlies before the World Cup.

We all want to see Ajiboye against congo DR because we want to observe him openly. Ajiboye was as well a European based goalkeeper too. Play him and he could become number one. Or finally drop him FOREVER. Musa Mohammed, kelechi and his brother and usman are worthy of invite in d real SENSE..

I think he was very vital for Cercle Brugge to help them gain promotion to the Jupiler. He only joined them in January, Musa also fall into that category so Uwa is absolutely vital to be in the team. Obviously, he was injured in the beginning of the season hence culminating to his lack of game time at Sivaspor. Our left back option is very minimal therefore, Elderson is needed at least for this WorldCup.

it may interest you that Mr Elderson played only 2 games for cercle Brugge and the last time he played competitive football was on the 25th of February 2018…exactly 3 months ago…while Musa between February and May played 16 competitive games for Cska scoring 7 goals in the process..so how then do we compare his situation to Musa’s.

I know he played 12 games in all completions for the season. Musa did not play any games in the first half of the season. So what’s the difference?

  • If you ask me, I would recommend Echiejile for this world cup simply because I belong to the old-school thinking that “Experience is not something that can be bought from a supermarket shelf”. Even if he is not a starter, his valuable wealth of experience – I think – will help galvanize the squad in training and in the dressing room and the younger defenders can also learn one or two things from him. I appreciate that contemporary wisdom is shifting (from experience to youth) because more and more younger players being picked by various countries to be the fulcrums of their squads. Nonetheless, experience is not to be discounted. Echiejile has served under many (senior) coaches including: Shuibu, Keshi (both of blessed memory), Largaback, SiaOne; yet, time and time again, he continues to be relevant despite his standard and basic skills. This has to be testament of his brilliant attitude which is hard to fault!

  • This guy has no business in the super Eagles, his style of play does not suit any modern Football, he shy away from the ball unlike well establish full backs that reads the game and add width to the team.
