Nigeria defender Elderson Echiejile admitted he was devastated to miss out on the recent World Cup, but says he is determined to avoid the same heartache when Russia
2018 rolls around. The full-back suffered a cruel blow just one week before the start of the Brazil showpiece when he picked up a muscle tear during the Super Eagles’ friendly encounter against Greece in Pennsylvania on June 3.
The left-back has since returned to fitness and is undergoing pre-season training with Ligue 1 giants Monaco, although he admits he is already looking ahead to the next World Cup, where he intends to feature for the Nigerians.
“It was a very sad time for me, but I have to move on with my career. I believe there are many World Cups still in me,” he told Kick Socca.
Echiejile is, however, putting his immediate focus into the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign, where Monaco will be hoping to wrestle the French league crown away from Paris Saint-Germain, having finished as runners-up in 2013/14.
“We were beaten to the championship by PSG and so the target would be to go one better and be champions of France again,” he said.
