Eguavoen: FIFA Ranking Should Not Affect Super Eagles’ World Cup Preparations

By Bamidele Boluwaji: Former Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has advised Gernot Rohr and his players that they should not allow the latest FIFA ranking to distract them ahead of the 2018 World Cup holding this summer in Russia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

In the latest ranking released on Thursday by the world football governing body, Nigeria dropped one place despite her silver-winning feat at the recently concluded 2018 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.

Reacting to the ranking on Friday, the former Sunshine Stars manager advised Rohr to concentrate on his World Cup preparations without allowing anything to distract his focus.

“I don’t know how they came about the ranking but what I will say is that our players and coach Rohr should not allow that to distract them,” Eguavoen told CSN.

“Personally, I want to see Nigeria perform well at the World Cup and that should be the ultimate for every player and the coaches.

“They should see the ranking as a push to do more in their preparation. Ranking at times is just to tell you to do more but if you ask me, I will say the latest ranking will help our players because coming down by one place means they have to work harder and make sure they get back and even do more to improve. So personally for me, the World Cup should be our priority.”

Having ranked 51st in January, Nigeria are now 52nd in the world with 606 points and seventh in Africa.

Nigeria will play some friendly matches next month and the games are expected to help the side improve on the FIFA rankings.

FIFA ranking is a method used to scale all registered associate Nations to determine their current football status and strength amongst national teams. Ranking is done once every month.
As it stands, the ranking model has been hugely criticised by many for failing to show current realities mainly due the parameters used for scaling.
We gathered that FIFA is currently considering rejigging its ranking formula after the Russia 2018 WC if low ranked teams can justify their call for better ranking by performance.
I personal hold the strong views that Nigeria currently fall within 1-4 in strength and character amongst other Nations.
I also hold that SE has the best midfielders in the World. It is my personal opinion & strong conviction after my research not based on sentiments. Everyone has their opinions.
Nigerians need not lose sleep over SE poor ranking, as released by FIFA because all that will change only if SE can go out there to prove that Nigeria deserve better ranking.
I also hold the strong views that Nigeria is a contender for the coveted WC in Russia 2018.
Gra-gra football will deliver the victory.
Gra-gra football is the excellent robust playing style of group attack and tackling of the ball that leaves opponents breathless, tired & worn out. It’s a traditional Nigerian grassroot playing style that has fetched us 5 FIFA U-17 WCs.
This is the indisputable style of SE now, rediscovered & championed by our own mercurial Captain & midfield general, John Mikel Obi.
The world has seen Jogo bonito, Total football, the German Mannshaft, and Spanish Tiki-Taka.
Nigeria’s Gra-gra football will redefine global football. See what it did to Algeria & Argentina last November.
Super Eagles only need the goodwill, support and prayers of Nigerians.
We will only wait to see the death of the FIFA ranking model many have written off as outdated, unrealistic & good for the archives.
    Good luck Super Eagles.
