Rivers United Technical Manager, Stanley Eguma, has confirmed to Complete Sports that the squad will depart the shores of the country on Sunday, December 4, for Spain where they will set up a pre-season camp
Rivers United finished second in last season’s Nigeria Professional Football League to book a place in next year’s CAF Champions League.
Rivers State’s Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike during a reception for the team at Bricks House, Port Harcourt, on October 8, promised to sponsor them to Madrid, Spain for their pre-season camping.
“We’ve secured visas for the trip and we’re looking at December 4 or 5 for the trip,” Eguma, who assisted Okey Emordi when Enyimba retained the CAF Champions League trophy in 2004, told Complete Sports.
Eguma also informed that 28 players will make the trip to Real Madrid.
“Our governor announced we will go to Spain, specifically to Real Madrid because he is a fan of the Les Blancos,” Eguma added.
“Now that promise is being fulfilled. The visas are ready and between Sunday December 4 and Monday December 5, we should be off to the land of La Liga.
“Of course, we’re looking at about 28 players for the trip. I don’t know yet how long we’ll be there, whether two weeks or thereabouts.
“But it all has to do with the LMC programme as regards the kick-off of the 2016/2017 NPFL.
“LMC are aware of our programme. They were equally helpful through their La Liga partnership.”
Rivers United, alongside other clubs that will represent the country in CAF interclub competitions next year, are scheduled to meet with NFF on Monday at which continental competitions registration documents will be handed over to them.
