Nigeria’s U23 Eagles will no longer play against Egypt in the 11th All African Games in Congo Brazzaville.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) on its website on Wednesday informed that the continent’s football controlling body have no intention to replace the north Africans after the sudden and shocking development.
A statement on the website of the african football ruling body, Cafonline.com stated:
“In accordance with Article 19 (B) of the regulations which states “If a team withdraws after having qualified for the Final Tournament, but before the actual start of the Final Tournament, the Organizing Committee may replace it by the last team it has eliminated, if the circumstances are favourable…”
Samson Siasia’s team, billed to travel to Congo next week, were scheduled to play against Egypt, but that will not be the case anymore.
However, the two teams eliminated by Egypt in the qualifiers, Senegal (Women) and Burundi (Men) also decided against replacing Egypt due to short notice.
No reason was given for the sudden withdrawal of the Egyptians with about a week to the start of the Games.
The tournament will be held from 6 – 18 September 2015 in Brazzaville, Congo.
The teams in the football events are as follows:
Congo, Nigeria, Tanzania, Cote d’Ivoire
Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa
Congo, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso
Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria
