Former Super Eagles midfielder Friday Ekpo is of the opinion that Nigeria’s U23 Eagles coach Samson Siasia should concentrate on working with the home-based U23s for the African U23 Nations Cup in December.
Ekpo spoke with Completesportsnigeria.com on the backdrop of reports that Siasia travelled to Europe to woo some players to play at the CAF U23 Nations Cup which serves as qualifiers to the football event of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“As much as we would love to have our best legs for the Championship in Senegal, it is not on FIFA’s calendar. So it will be very difficult to have the players released by their European clubs.
“When Nigeria hopefully qualifies for the Olympics proper, then it will be wonderful to have the good players from Europe and those here in the Olympics squad,” Ekpo stated .
“I believe the Dream Team VI will qualify for the Olympics anyway. There are some of the boys who are not regulars in their clubs who will likely make it,
but my point is: there are still those who can play as much as those from European clubs,” the one-time Calabar Rovers ace told Completesportsnigeria.com.
Siasia was in Belgium to speak with forward Moses Simon over his availability for the U23 Eagles commitment.
The CAF U23 Nations Cup holds December 5 to 19, 2015.
Senegal replaced DR Congo as host nation for the Championship.
