Sam Allardyce’s return to his former home ground, Boleyn Ground, on Saturday ended in defeat as 19th placed Sunderland fell 1-0 to West Ham United who went up to 5th temporarily in the table.
Former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike was in action for 59 minutes but did not score in West Ham United’s 1-0 win against Sunderland.
Victor Moses came off the bench in place of Manuel Lanzini five minutes later.
An amazing individual effort from Michail Antonio ended with a strike from inside the penalty area.
The forward sent the ball precisely into the bottom left corner to put his side ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute of the game. Vito Mannone in goal for the Black Cats was helpless.
Seven minutes earlier, Morroco and Sunderland forward Wahbi Khazri took a mid-range free kick and his stunning strike crashed against the crossbar. The ball went out-of-play.
Jermain Defoe missed two great chances for Sunderland at the start of the second half.
Both sides could not score again in end-to-end counter attacking football though more of the chances fell to West Ham.
