Ericsson Not Giving Up On F1 future

Sauber driver Marcus Ericsson says he is determined to return to Formula 1 in the future after being ousted for next year. Sauber have confirmed their drivers for 2019 will be Kimi Raikkonen, following his move from Ferrari, and Italian Antonio Giovinazzi – meaning Ericsson will have to settle for a behind-the-scenes role at the team.

The Swede says his long-term aim is to be back on the grid full-time and he’s currently weighing up his options, although he has accepted a reserve-driver role at Sauber for next year.

“My goal is to still come back to F1,” he said in Autosport. “For 2019 that is not going to happen, but hopefully after that there will be possibilities to come back.
“It is obviously disappointing to be not racing, it is all you want to do.

“I am happy to be able to continue my relationship with the team, but I want to race still. I am looking at different options to somehow keep doing that, in what series and what it could be.

“It is still a bit early, this news is quite fresh. I need to look at my options.”
Ericsson has been racing in F1 since 2014, initially at Caterham before switching to Sauber, with his best-ever performance coming in the 2015 Australia GP when he finished eighth.

This season he has managed six points and sits 18th in the World Driver’s Championship.
