Etebo Tops Take-Ons Chart, Completes More Dribbles Than Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar

By Nurudeen Obalola:

Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo has been given a reason to smile after playing a part in his side’s defeat to Croatia in their Russia 2018 Group D clash on Saturday.
Etebo, making his World Cup debut, was unlucky to score an own goal to give Croatia the lead before William Troost-Ekong gifted the Europeans a penalty for their second in the 2-0 defeat.
However, new Stoke City signing Etebo was one of Nigeria’s few standout players in the clash.
Statistics have now backed up his excellent showing, rating him as the most proficient player in terms of take-ons in the whole competition so far.
“Oghenekaro Etebo has completed the most take-ons in a single game at the 2018 #WorldCup after the first four days.
• 9 attempted • 9 completed. Perfect dribbling display,” football statistics outlet Squawka tweeted on Sunday.
The stat confirms that Etebo has outdone Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar in the dribbling stakes so far in Russia.

Messi comppleted eight of 13 attempted take-ons in Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Iceland on Saturday.

AM JUST GETTING OUT OF THE SHOCK OF YESTERDAY’S MATCH. NOT THAT I WAS EXPECTING OUR EAGLES TO WHITEWASH THE CROATIANS BUT I WAS NOT ALSO EXPECTING US TO BE BEATEN. BEFORE I BEGIN TO STRESS MY POINTS LET ME FIRST TELL ALL COMRADES THAT NOBODY ON THIS FORUM WANTED NIGERIA TO FAIL IN RUSSIA.ALTHOUGH THERE ARE CRITICS YET NONE WANTED SUPER EAGLES TO SUFFER DEFEAT.
Personally, I WAS EXPECTING EAGLES TO BEAT THE CROATIANS AFTER WATCHING THE GAME FOR 15 MINUTES ,THEN IT WAS APPARENT THAT OUR OPPONENT was A LITTLE GENTLE WITH US KNOWING THAT RUSHING  AND DRAGGING THE GAME WITH US WILL BURN THEM OUT AND THIS WOULD BE SUICIDAL .THEY HAD A GAME PLAN AND IT WAS TO MAKE USE OF THEIR SET PIECE KNOWING FULLY THAT MOST AFRICAN TEAMS ARE SUSPECTIBLE IN THESE AREAS. I WILL CONCLUDE THAT WE LOST TO THEM NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE BETTER BUT BECAUSE OUR COACH FAILED TO USE THE NIGERIA FACTOR AND THE NIGERIA SPIRIT.  EAGLES WILL NEVER GET ANYTHING RIGHT IF WE  FAIL TO INITIATE URGENCY IN OUR GAME AND BE PHYSICAL. RUGGEDNESS AND PHYSICALITY BLENDED WITH SPEED WOULD HAVE KILLED THE CROATS. WE DONT NECESSARY NEED TO HAVE ABUNDANCE OF SKILL. TAKE FOR EXAMPLE OUR MATCH AGAINST ATM, OBSERVE THE WAY WE MOVE THE BALL WITH SPEED AND RUGGEDNESS, EVERYBODY WAS INVOLVED IN THE PLAYING, SO ALSO THE GAME AGINST ARGENTINA THERE WAS FLUIDITY. SHOULD I SAY OUR BOYS ARE NOT COMMITTED ENOUGH.  MODERN DAY FOOTBALL CARELESS ABOUT NAMES OR SKILL BUT URGENCY AND QUICKNESS, LOOK AT MEXICO, SWITZERLAND THESE TEAMS PLAYED AS A UNIT AND WERE QUICK IN PASSING THE BALL AROUND, BUT OUR TEAM YESTERDAY WERE JUST EITHER PASSING THE BALL BACKWARD OR BEING SLUGGISH TO MOVE IT FORWARD.THE ONLY TWO PLAYERS THAT WERE WILLING TO BE ADVENTUROUS WERE ETEBO AND IWOBI.IWOBI WAS WILLING TO TAKE THE BALL UPFRONT BUT NO SUPPORT, WHILE ETEBO TOO WAS INSTRUCTED  NOT TO MOVE AHEAD OF MIKEL WHO TO ME WAS OUR WEAKEST LINK.TWO WEEKS AGO ONE ARGENTINAL SUPERSTAR SAID THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA TEAM IS MIKEL BECAUSE HE WAS ALWAYS SLOW TO MOVE THE PLAY INTO SPACE.

ANOTHER THING I NOTICED IN THIS WORLD CUP THOUGH I MIGHT BE WRONG IS THAT AFRICAN FOOTBALL ARE OVER RATED.NO WONDER BIG CLUBS DONT BUY AFRICAN PLAYERS. AFRICAN TEAMS LACK TACTICAL SENSE TO PLAY IN THE WORLD CUP SUCCESSFULLY. AM AFRAID IN 30 YEARS TO COME, TEAMS, FROM AFRICA MIGHT STRUGGLE TO BEAT OCEANIC OR ASIANS NOT TO TALK ABOUT EUROPEANS OR AMERICANS.

IN OUR NEXT MATCH SHEHU SHOULD BE BENCHED OTHERWISE I MUST HAVE TO BELIEVE NFA IS TRYING TO IMPRESS THE NORTH. EBUEHI SHOULD REPLACE HIM, IGHALO ALSO SHOULD BE MADE TO SIT ON THE BENCH BECAUSE HE IS ON THE FIELD TO FLEX MUSCLE NOT TO SCORE GOALS.OUR FANTASTIC CAPTAIN SHOULD BE RESTRED AND LET THE YOUNG ONES THAT STILL HAVE CHANCE OF APPEARING IN NEXT WORLD CUP BE USED .IWOBI CAN PLAY AT THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK WHILE ETEBO AND NDIDI,TWO WORKAHOLICS PALYERS CAN SUPPORT HIM FROM THEIR DEFENSIVE POSTIONS . MOSES TO ME KILL THE MORALE OF THE PLAYERS BY HANGING TO THE BALL TOO MUCH THEREBY ALLOWING THE OPPONENT TO RELAUNCH THEIR DEFENSIVE POSITION.

    • Olawale 5 months ago

Well said my brother, shehu kill the game also by sitting deep.. I was displeased when I saw shehu ahead of ebuehi.. Ebuehi is versatile and move the ball.. Has pace and cover the right wings very well.. Don’t know why he would bench such player..

  • Ikechukwu 5 months ago

Nice comments my brother, to add to what you highlighted the world cup is a serious business for serious minded people. So our team must come to the party with the tenacity to do well. If we continue playing we way we did against the Croatians then we are out. Every other team that has played so far played with a plan and it is evident in the result. Rohr please wake up with your tactics. Let’s play football in the manner the Super Eagles is known for. God bless you.

    • Whisky 5 months ago

rohr should look at morroco, Egypt, Switzerland and Mexico and find out if the Super eagles could be compared to their standard of play.. Right now am confused I don’t if the problem is d coach or with the quality of players the Super eagles have in their disposL.

Complete sport should please advice Rohr to start
    Iheanacho
    Moses Musa

    Iwobi
    Mikel Ndidi

    Idowu Balogun Ekong Ebuehi

    Uzoho
as the first 11 eleven. Almost every one knows that Super Eagles will win and score goals in multiples as they did worn against Argentina 4-2 by using this set of players as the first eleven and in this formation.
Complete sport should help NIGERIA PLEASE!!!!! Thank you

    • Stone 5 months ago

Peace you got it right that is Nigeria best starting XI. The best formation for the eagles is 4-2-1-3. 4(idowu, balogun, ekong, ebuehi), 2( Mikel and Ndidi as good holding defensive midfield giving cover for defence and Mikel able realease and connect defence- attack midfield), 1(Iwobi as attacking midfielder/ CAM) this will give him the space to operate, dribble and use his vision which he clearly has upfield to unleash balls to the forward 3(iheanacno, Moses, Musa).

Musa and Moses interchanging on the wings and Iheanacho in middle (really all 3 can rotate to give a flexible free flowing High pressure and unpredictable attack. Because Iheanacho coming in from the right flank can cut in and unleash his famous curlers same with Moses and Musa or cross the ball to another incoming striker or the CAM who will be coming in with pace and can really rock the back net(see iwobi goal against england). Definitely highly mobile attack. Substitute Iheanacho/Simy , Moses/Etebo because the 4-2-1-3 can easily become a 4-2-3-1 but this time Etebo in the offensive part of midfield and a 4-5-1 when under high pressure or defence. So this is a highly versatile attack and solid defense formation. Also Mikel can sub for Ogu when tired. That way if their physical fitness is tip top Nigeria can really play 90+ mins of high pressure attack and defending football. Give the opponents no rest the whole match.

  • I support all your comments here.

when we defeated Argentina mikel, igalo, moses did not play. its very simple they are the ones spoiling the games. this is my plan if I were to be the coach. drop ighlo on bench mikel to should be dropped. forgive moses bcos of his speed, now play 3 stickers up front 3 man midfield let etebo use his energy nididi should hold the midfield with support of etebo. give iwobi freerool in tge middle musa inihacho moses upfront with tge support of right and left full back. I am sure we will get goal and even free kicks and penalty bcos Iceland team are very big and tall in size what we needd is speed and quick passes.

Listen to me,i don’t have much to say but,if i must talk, the truth is bitter but must be told at all cost. It is too late to cry when d head is off.according to what i saw in our last match, there is no hope for us. The super eagles are not winning any match in dat group and it is not a prayer thing and once they are back in Nigeria, d white coach should leave and his contract terminated. Imo river

Uzoho is the best goal keeper Nigeria has. Any criticism of him is completely misplaced. Whom do you think should have been there Akpeyi ? Ashy, go to bed. you are tired.

    • Israel Akinlawon 5 months ago

Case closed. Ño need of fighting. Uzoho is our best goalkeeper for now. Our problem is not goalkeeping but to reorganize the defence, midfield and attack. Use 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 (when attacking and defending); bench Shehu for Ebuehi, pair Heidi with Mikel, use either Iwobi or Etebo in the creative midfield role, usetwo strikers (Ighalo-Moses, Ighallo-Simmy or Iheanacho-Simeon).This formation will Iceland and Argentina hands down.

  • JOSEPH 5 months ago

@Edomen well said, that our best goalkeeper, uzoho, if its possible ,let him even drop mikel and let see what will happen.

  • Olawale 5 months ago

@ashy.. Nigerian goalkeeper are bad in area balls and I think uzoho is ahead, forget him being young or inexperience but I think he is the future goalkeeper for Nigeria.. I have not seen his mistake except against england and the world best goalkeeper made the same in this world cup against Portugal..

    • Olawale, Uzoho is not my problem. If you consider his relative inexperience, he has been fantastic. He has a strong mental attitude and this world cup experience can only be good for both him and Nigeria going forward.
My problem is Gernot Rohr’s talent discovery and selection process that has left a genuine world cup contender like Nigeria take a baby keeper to the world cup.
He used the principle of ‘satisficing’ to seek and select a suitable Goalkeeper rather than widened and broadening his seach to look for a Goalkeeper that will enhance our chances of being considered as genuine world cup contenders. Rather, we have a Goalkeeper, midfield and strike-force that has done more to cement our place as a pretender rather than a contender in this tournament.
My problem is not any of the players. Play Ighalo right and he will score you goals, bring Uzoho as an understudy and it will bring balance to the squad. Play natural attacking-minded midfielder and your midfield will to tick. Put players in their rightful positions and you will get the best out of even the least talented of them.
      This coach is poor.

  • First time here… If you must play Shehu play in defensive midfield he is very good there. That is his real role it was Siasia who tried him at right back against Egypt and left him there for the Olympics bcos his original right-back Sincere Seth had to pair Troost-Ekong due to Segun Oduduwa’s unfortunate injury. Lazy Rohr and his Nigerian hype-team have failed to use our best weapons in their proper positions just to accommodate Mikel. We all know Etebo is our new Oruma. He is a support striker who has the legs to cover the ground behind the main striker, his problem is that he is so good that he excels in any role. Go and watch Nigeria-Japan(Olympics) or Algeria-Nigeria (Senegal Olympics qualifiers) nobody could live with him. Play him, Vmoses and Iwobi behind Iheanacho. Then play Shehu and Ndidi at the base. Let ebuehi replace Shehu at right-back then you will see speed and fire that is what Nigeria is known for. Mikel can join Rohr on the bench as assistant manager. Think of it… Etebo has more passes, dribbles etc and he is playing almost as a defender…what a tragedy.

  • My fellow forumites. I feel very sad like everyone have done on this forum.

The match against Croatia was not the true reflections of the Nigerian way of football expression. Etebo, Ndidi,Ihenacho and Musa tried to express that a little bit but the formation was just out of point. The coach hasn’t changed anything or brought anything to us. We have achieved related progress based on the Nigerian factors not by Rhors input. He may have some knowledge of formations but he doesn’t have the right knowledge of it application.

He talks too much . Some times talk us into submission. This is not the Nigerian way. I think Mike should understand that when things are not going well, he should take charge of proceedings by urging the boys to play the Nigerian way. Like keshi days. Keshi was like a player coach in his time. That was one reason he was referred to as the BOSS. At some point in the game, when it’s going rough, you urged the boys to play a formation that allows us to express our game plan and win.

Rhors system are too restrictive. Let him allow the boys to show more aggression and urgency with precision and speed. This what we are known for. Like the game against Argentina. It was not Rhors plan. The boys played what they felt was good for them and it was effective.

I believe in our GRAGRA FOOTBALL. ..!

If they don’t figure it out and really play with heart then Nigeria can just come home albeit embarrassing especially having a much better planned lead up to the world cup. The gains should not be discarded tho despite whatever the outcome is. If we have a consistent, well thought out srategies including scouting, friendlies, good consistent coaching and technical crew, CONSISTENCY we have what it takes win or possibly do really well in a world cup. The Matches so far have shown in soccer big names on paper don’t mean nothing on the pitch for international football. The key to success is a good blend, synergy and understanding between the players and tactics that plays to your available players strength. GREECE won Euro championship with no big name players.you don’t have much time just before major tournaments to train together unlike club football where you train and play together for many months. So that’s why having a system in place even in years were there is no major tournament where the team can play a lot friendlies, train together, try new formations, tactics, new players, same players in different positions etc. So when a tournament gets close you already have worked through a lot of what works and what doesn’t so during tournaments like this we spend it honing our areas of strength and becoming surgical

  • First time here… This is an appeal to Gernot Rohr and his hype merchants. Please let us play like Nigerians, if we fail…we fail but it won’t be for lack of trying. Rohr is a novice as far as the world cup is concerned. You can’t beat a Croatian,Czech or English Serbian team by trying to copy them. You beat them by bringing your own football to the table. Speed, aggression, chutzpah, flair that’s what we are about. This timid, tepid, ” surrender before the fight” football is strange to us. We are a proud Nation. Secondly, Rohr is a lazy coach; Shehu Abdulahi is a fantastic defensive midfielder, Siasia just tried him at right back against Egypt to address a problem temporarily, he continued in that position at the Olympics bcos the main right back Sincere Seth had to partner Troost-Ekong in CD due to Segun Oduduwa’s unfortunate injury. In CHAN, at club level,at youth level everyone knows Shehu is a DM.Tyrone is a natural right back. Moving forward… Please don’t kill Etebo for us that guy is the new Wilson Oruma…he is a supporting striker checking him out in fierense, the Olympics and against Algeria in Senegal Olympics qualifiers. He is so talented that he excels in other positions but use his strengths offensively and cover his space with Shehu. Etebo, moses and Iwobi behind Iheanacho then you will see fire…

  • See comments by Mr know all Nigerians. We should try to be conservative and fair in our judgment. Cos Nigeria lost the match that now made the coach bad all of a sudden. What can now be said of Argentina,Germany,Brazil match? Who can ever belief Brazil that have been winning all their matches 100% will drew with Switzerland talkless of Germany and Argentina. The same coach brought Uzoho and fielded Etebo ahead of Onazi in that match. Nigerian should desist from this attitude of blame game. He made a mistake agreed but to say he is not good that means Brazilian,German and Argentine coach are not good as well because none of their opponents were as good as Croatia and those country are by far better than Nigeria that you want to win at all cost against the Croatian.
My advise is stop blaming this man. They win together as a team and loose together as a team. Whichever way it goes in the competition it will better for us to continue with him as the coach if he is still interested.

I don’t agree with people who have started criticizing Mr Rohr. It was through his tactics that we were able to achieve all the victories leading to the world cup. The jinx against Argentina was broken because he changed d formation in the second half. The game against African Champions Cameroon, Zambia and Algeria are all examples of the technical depth of Mr Rohr. There was nothing like the Nigerian spirit before Rohr took over.
We just need our players to concentrate and be more disciplined. And we should respect our opponents less

  • ADEMOLA THE PRESIDENT 5 months ago

ITS HIGH TIME WE DISCARD TRADITION IN OUR GAME PLAY,WAS JUST READING RAKITIC COMMENT ABOUT ETEBO HE SAID ” I HAD TO KEEP THAT NUMBER 8 AWAY FROM OUR GOAL”.  THIS WAS THE ONLY REAL THREAT WE HAD IN OUR TEAM AND YET OUR COACH RESTRICTED HIM FROM GOING FORWARD PREFER OLD LEG LIKE MIKEL WHO DOESNT HAVE THE STAMINA TO BE SPEAR OUR OFFENSIVE FORAY.DONT GET ME WRONG AM NOT AGAINST MIKEL BUT THE FACT IS JUST THAT WE NEED POWER PLAYERS TO BULLY OUR OPPONENT TO SURRENDER IN THEIR OWN HALF.

THIS IS ONE AREA I LOVE ABOUT SIASIA.HE MAKES SURE  OUR TEAM PLAY TO OUR STRENGTH WHICH IS POWER PLAY. AGAINST ICELAND AM SCARED . I NEED ASSURANCE FROM YOU FRIENDS THAT ALL WILL BE WELL.

  • God bless u @ tayo.i wil comment on dis platfor 4 d first tim,, our major problem in dis country is we always find som1 2 blam 4 evry misfortun. we blame our failures on our vilag piple, step modas nd d government, d president blams d past government. when can we be RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH to take responsilities, please u piple should knw dat evry team goin in2 a game has d mindset 2 win, if it does’nt go our way lets be patriotic enough 2 dust ourselves up nd kip hopin. pls lets leave d coach nd players alone.. i hav bin depressed since dat loss but am stil optimistic. if Argentina, Brazil Can draw, Germany lose den who are we.. 4 me i wont blam anybody, we lost bt we cn do betta. love you ALL

  • I’ll wait till Friday, against ICELAND before i comment

  • USA 94, first game:
    Nigeria 3 0 Bulgaria.

Bulgaria eventually finished fourth in the competition while Nigeria crashed out in the second round.

The Super Eagles can still go far in this competition if they can learn from their mistakes and play with their hearts.

Lastly, enough with the criticisms already. We should all get behind the team and give them our support. That is our number one job as fans.

    Up Super Eagles!

  • Whisky 5 months ago

    • Ikeben 5 months ago

@Wisky,why should we learn from Morocco and Egypt that lost like us. The players are not the problem, but the coach got his tactics and player deployment wrong. Why always play a lone striker, when it is not working. But to be fair to the players and the coach, the defense was better organized and performed better than the last 3 friendlies.
The two goals were unfortunate gifts to the croatians. Their only shot on target was the penalty.if our tactics was right we could have easily won them.

But that, I believe it is too early to condemn the coach, the way some of us are doing. We still have one more game to get things right. Yes, like someone said, in 1994, Bulgaria lost the first match 3:0 to us and still came fouth. In 2010, Spain, lost their opening match and still won the world cup. Nigeria still have everything to fight for. So let’s support the team. Last year, we drew with Iran in our opening match, lost to Argentina in the second match and still qualified. I remember telling everyone that cared to hear that Nigeria will beat Bosnia and I was laughed to scorn. Yet it happened.

It is so sad that Nigerian fans give up so early on our darlin SE. We never support the team, during the difficult moments. But if it is, Chelsea, Arsenal or Man U, we will keep believing and hoping. I choose to stand with the team and I believe that we will come out of the group and make Africa proud.

This is what I have seen about Nigeria fans; if we played according to our strengths i.e all players playing in their best positions. We will hear good comments like we tried, that is the best we could do. However,  when they play so poorly that even an old woman will say that they didn’t play anything, the comments are worth it. What pains me is that Rohr tested all these formation and player positions, we watched it in the friendlies and saw the game plan that we featured well but he opted out to use a game plan that has a track record of failing, unproductiveness.

If you said the players are not top notch or skillful, that will be a naive comment.

Play a compact football, play the players in their best positions, play the most productive formation (for now 3-5-2) and if you don’t see a better show then I will agree that the players are all below par.
Else, I do believe it is Rohr’s problem now and needs fixing.
I spend super eagles my best wishes as I wait for Friday.

Too much physical but poor formation. That’s why you were defeated. Penalty also wasn’t fair to me.
