Nigerian forward, Samuel Kalu, was on target for KAA Gent, but it wasn't enough as they lost 5-2 at home to fellow Belgian top flight team KRC Genk in the Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday night, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Also in action for Gent were Moses Simon, Rabiu Ibrahim and Anderson Esiti who was sent off in the 84th minute.
Kalu scored in the 27th minute to cancel out Ruslan Malinovsky's 21st minute opener for Genk.
Genk went 2-1 up on 33 minutes through Omar Colley before Mbwana Samara and Jere Uronen scored in the 41st and 45th minute to end the first half 4-1 in favour of Genk.
In the 61st minute Gent halved the deficit with Kalifa Coulibaly making it 4-2.
Gent had the chance to claw their way back into the game when they were awarded a penalty on 68 minutes when Kalu was fouled inside the 18-yard box but Jeremy Perbet missed.
And in the 72nd minute Samata made it 5-2 to put the tie beyond Gent.
In another Europa League Round of 16 game that was played, Lyon playing at home, defeated Roma 4-2, while in Germany, Borussia Monchengladbach held fellow Bundesliga side Schalke 04 to a 1-1 away draw.
In other results, Celta Vigo beat visiting FC Krasnodar 2-1 and Olympiakos were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Besiktas.
