Europa: Rashford Scores Stunner Vs Celta As United Take First Leg Advantage

Marcus Rashford scored a superb free-kick in the 62nd minute to hand Manchester United a crucial 1-0 away win over Celta Vigo in the first leg semi-final clash in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Jose Mourinho’s side were the better side throughout the encounter and had more attempts on goal that their hosts.

Celta Vigo had the first chance at goal in the 11th minute when Daniel Wass failed to connect his header to Nemanja Radoja’s cross.

Eight minutes later Manchester United reacted through Rashford who curled in his effort towards the top corner but goalkeeper Canelo Alvarez produced an acrobatic stop to push it behind for a corner.

Towards the end of the first half there were chances at both ends as Celta Vigo forced United onto the back foot, moving the ball confidently in the final third before Pione Sisto fired a wayward shot from the edge of the box, straight at Sergio Romero.

United also staged a swift counter which could have yielded the opening goal had Jesse Lingard managed to reach Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s low pass across the face of goal in the 33rd minute.

Rashford eventually broke the deadlock by side footing a freekick straight over the wall and into the back of the net, leaving Alvarez with no chance. The strike was his 19th goal for Manchester United in all competitions.

The winner of this tie will meet Ajax or Olympique Lyon in the final at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on Wednesday, 24 May.
