Europa: Simon, Esiti Help Gent Dump Spurs; Lyon, Gladbach, Genk Progress

Nigerian pair Moses Simon and Anderson Esiti were in action for Gent as the Belgian club held 10-man Tottenham Hotspur to a 2-2 draw at Wembley Stadium on Thursday night to qualify 3-2 on aggregate in the second leg, round of 32 of their Europa League tie, Completespprtsnigeria.com reports.

Nigerians Rabiu Ibrahim and Samuel Kalu were unused substitutes in the game. Forward Simon was withdrawn in the 74th minute while Esiti played all 90 minutes in the heart of Gent’s modfield.

Christian Eriksen gave Spurs the lead on 10 minutes but an own goal by Harry Kane, who was under pressure from Simon on 20 minutes made it 1-1.

In the 40th minute Dele Alli was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle.

Victor Wanyama scored to make it 2-1 for Spurs on 61 minutes before Jeremy Perbet drew Gent level on 82 minutes to end the game 2-2.

In another Europa League game, Nigerian forward Fred Friday made an appearance for AZ Alkmaar who were thrashed 7-1 by Lyon.

Lyon qualified 11-2 on goals aggregate.

Friday was replaced by Wout Weghorst in the 77th minute.

In other Europa League results in Thursday’s late kick-offs, Copenhagen progressed on 2-1 aggregate after playing a 0-0 home draw against Ludogorets, Monchengladbach stunned Fiorentina 4-2 in Italy despite losing the first leg 1-0 at home, Genk pipped Astru Giurgiu 1-0 and made it into the next round 3-2 aggregate, while Rostov held Sparta Prague to a 1-1 away draw to proceed 5-1 on aggregate score.
