Europa: Simon’s Gent Out As Henty, Gero Advance; Milan, Everton Reach Play-Offs

Nigerian striker Ezekiel Henty helped his Hungarian club Videoton FC qualify for the play-off of the UEFA Europa League as they defeated French side Bordeaux 1-0 on Thursday in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie to advance 2-2 on the away goals rule, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Henty, who made his second UEFA Europa League appearance, was replaced in the stoppage time of the encounter.

In Luxembourg, Alhaji Gero played all 90 minutes for Oestersunds FK who beat CS Fola Esch 2-1 on the night to qualify 3-1 on aggregate. Gero has scored twice in 18 appearances in all competitions this season.

The pair of Rilwan Hassan and Paul Onuachu needed a last-gasp winner from Alexander Soerloth for FC Midtjylland to oust Polish side Arka Gdynia 2-1 in the second leg to qualify 4-4 on away goals, having lost the first leg 3-2.

The win for the pair takes the number of Nigerian players in the Europa League draw play-offs draw to five. The players are Henty, Gero, Kayode Olanrewaju, Hassan and Onuachu.

In Austria, the trio of Moses Simon, Anderson Esiti and Samuel Kalu all featured for Gent who could not get past Altach, losing 3-1 ( 4-2 on aggregate) on the night after the reverse fixture ended 1-1 in Belgium.

Esiti was replaced by his compatriot Kalu in the 39th minute while Simon played the whole game.

Former Super Eagles striker, Joseph Akpala, extended his goal drought to three games despite featuring for 69 minutes in Oostende’s goalless draw at home to Olympique Marseille. The first leg ended 4-2 on aggregate in favour of Marseille in France.

In other results, AC Milan advanced to the play-offs with a 3-0 aggregate win over CS Universitatea,Osijek dumped out Dutch side PSV Eindhoven following another 1-0 win over the former Dutch champions. The tie ended 2-0 on aggregate.

Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the match winner for English Premier League club Everton who laboured to a 1-0 win over Ruzomberok. The tie finished 2-0 on aggregate in favour of the Toffees.

The play-offs draw will be held on Friday.
