Ex-Argentina Coach Basile Condemns Super Eagles Defence, Banks On Messi

By Adeboye Amosu:
Former Argentina coach Alfio Basile believes Nigeria will be tough opponents for the Albiceleste at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia but insisted that his countrymen can take advantage of what he perceived a weak defence to earn a win against the Africans.

The South Americans are Group D along with Nigeria, Croatia and debutants Iceland.

They will face the Super Eagles in their last group game on June 20 at the Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg

“I heard the coach from Iceland and I thought he was very smart but we cannot be afraid of Iceland, the Nigerians are very good, but their defenders are not good enough,” Basile, who coached Argentina between 1991 and 1994, told Ole.com.ar.

Basile, 74 also spoke about the importance of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero to the team.

“If the ten is good, we can beat anyone, if Messi is not, we are a team of the bunch,” he said.

“At this moment Agüero is indisputable, Manchester City have a great team”.

I am sure this guy is looking at Akpeyi in goal. However, he is afraid of Nigeria super eagle. Preparations is going to be the key. Even the South Africans make fool of Akpeyi than to ask him to face Messi and Arguero. If you look at 1996 Olympic match, the best way to beat Argentina is to overrun them. Messi or not, Nigeria can beat Argentina if we prepare superbly.

  • I don’t agree with him, Nigerian defence is strong enough to face any team in the world, we have got the players, and our team work is good enough. All that is left is to discover a good goalkeeper.Nigeria can get to any length in this world cup.Write them off at ur own peril

There are some truth in what he said. Our defense needs to work on and I believe our coach will work on Them before the World Cup proper.

the coach is correct the defence need to be worked on

  • THE COACH IS RIGHT BUT THE WAY ARGENTINA IS HOPING ON MESSI MAY FAIL THEM, IT CAN BE AN INJURY OR A BAN. EVEN THOUGH WE DON’T HAVE A GOOD DEFENCE STILL WE DON’T PLACE OUR HOPE ON ONE PLAYER BUT ATLEAST WE HAVE EKONG AND BALOGUN I PRAY THEY DO THEIR BEST.

  • ROHR SHOULD GO FOR OVIE EJARIA, DOMINIC LORFA AND TOSIN ADARABIOYO THEY ARE ALL BETTER THAN AKPOGUMA KEVIN AND COULD STRENGTHEN OUR DEFENCE.

I think this man is making a huge mistake. Maybe he thought that we are going to take the same set of players they played with Argentina during the friendly match to the world cup. Hmmm, “OTISHI” There are some new players that still going to join the rest of the team. This is the right time Nigeria needs to show Argentina and the whole world that Africa is more than their imaginations and Super Eagles will show them pepper at this year world cup by God’s grace. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Truth be told, these guys are getting jittery because they are facing a transformed SE. Messi and Aguero would not be able to save this overrated Argentines from a severe bashing by the SE. Let us say enough is enough and the heavens has already agreed with us. Nigeria and Iceland will go through.

The Basile man must be on hard drugs. How many of their qualifying matches did Argentina win with Messi in the team?
