Former Chelsea star Frank Sinclair has hailed the midfield partnership of John Mikel Obi and Nemanja Matic.
Mikel and Matic held sway in Chelsea’s midfield as the London side beat Stoke 2-0 on Monday night with goals from captain John Terry and Cesc Fabregas.
And Sinclair who won the FA Cup and the League Cup during his time with Chelsea, posited that the combination of the duo has made Mourinho side solid.
“Matic is priceless,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. “It’s no coincidence that he didn’t play in the one game they lost this season [against Newcastle]. He plays a big part.
“And in the last few games (John Obi) Mikel has come back in as well and they look even more solid with the two of them in there, and that gives Cesc Fabregas the licence to get forward and do his stuff further up the pitch.”
Chelsea ensured they would go into the busy festive period top of the league with a battling 2-0 win at Stoke on Monday night, and Sinclair believes it was important they maintained that momentum.
He added: “It was a big statement to beat Stoke because Man City are going well and they would have had a boost going into the New Year if they were joint top.
“For what Chelsea have done so far this season, being so far in front and then being pegged back by City, I think it was important they kept that little gap going into the Christmas period.”
