Ex-Flying Eagles Forward Nwobodo Scores, Shines In New Role For Hungarian Club Ujpest

Ex junior international, Obinna Nwobodo, scored his first goal of 2018 on Tuesday and believes it is further confirmation of his improved form now that he plays in his preferred attacking midfield role at Hungarian top flight OTP Bank Liga side, Ujpest, Completesportsnigeria.com (CSN) reports.

The enterprising forward, who scored for Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, on their way to clinching the African Youth Championship three years ago, had to make do with a role on the right flank after moving to Hungary last summer.

Despite the limitation, he was able to get on the scoresheet once during the first phase of the season before the winter break in December.

But with just four games into the second half of the season, Nwobodo has already found the back of the net as he consolidated a 2-0 win for Ujpest against fellow top division side, Paksi SE in in the second leg Round of 16 to qualify for the quarter finals of Magyar Kupa (the Hungarian Cup) on 4-0 aggregate.

Patrik Tischler netted the first goal in the 56th minute, and Nwobodo scored the second for Ujpest in the 86th minute .

Before hitting the back of the net on Tuesday, the 21-year-old had provided two assists as Ujpest scored five goals in their three previous games in 2018.

He would have doubled his goals tally in Tuesday’s game but was denied by the post after he dribbled past the opposing goalkeeper.

“I will say I’m enjoying a new lease of life in my career since moving here,” the former Rangers International of Enugu lynchpin told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“I had to discuss with the coach during the winter preparation after I came back from Nigeria in January. I told him that he should try me in midfield, that that’s where he can get the best of me because I will be able to fight more for the team and create more chances.”

Nwobodo now sees a brighter future for himself in his debut season in European football:

“The coach is satisfied with my performance in my new position,” he further informed CSN.

“I’m also happy because he now knows that I can do many things for the team as the number 10 as I also had a hand in our first goal.”
