By James Agberebi:
Former Nigeria international George Abbey has sent a good luck message to the Super Eagles ahead of tonight’s (Saturday) Group D 2018 FIFA World Cup clash against Croatia.
The Super Eagles will hope to clinch their first win in a World Cup group opener since France 1998 when they stunned Spain 3-2.
Since the win against Spain, they have lost two (1-0 defeats both to Argentina at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups) and drawn one (0-0 against Iran at 2014 World Cup) of their last three World Cup opening group games.
Also for Croatia, the last time they won a World Cup opening game was a 3-1 win against fellow debutants Jamaica at the 1998 World Cup. They have lost all three of their World Cup opening games (2002, 2006, 2014).
Ahead of the game against Croatia, Abbey who was in the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, wrote on his Twitter handle:”Wishing @NGSuperEagles all the best as we take on Croatia tonight#upeagles.”
The Super Eagles game against Croatia will be preceded by Argentina taking on Iceland.
