Former Zambia international, Jericho Shinde, has charged Chipolopolo players to rekindle the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning spirit ahead of their 2018 World Cup qualifier against Nigeria, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Zambia will hosts Nigeria on October 9 on match-day 1 of the World Cup qualifier.
Shinde, a member of the Zambian side that defeated Nigeria 3-0 at the 1982 AFCON and also a part of the team that eliminated Nigeria in the qualifiers for the 1986 AFCON, said serious dedication was needed from the players ahead Nigeria clash.
“The draws are okay, the boys need to be patriotic enough and apply themselves. We need a lot of dedication from the players. We want players that are committed to the cause,” Shinde told Zambia Post.
“We need the players to exhibit the spirit that they exhibited in 2012. That team that won the AFCON was not the best team but because of the spirit they exhibited, they won. If only we can rekindle that spirit as we play the World Cup qualifiers.”
Shinde said the coaches would do their part but the onus will be on the players to make things work.
“Wedson (Zambia Head Coach) has the pedigree but it is up to the architects themselves who are the players, they need to be passionate. You could be good but if you are not passionate, you can’t achieve anything,” said Shinde.
