Super Eagles goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has stated that he was surprised to be named captain as the players in the national team's camp in Kano are all capable of being handed the captain's hand band, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The FC Ifeanyiubah star was this week confirmed as the home-based Eagles skipper ahead of the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Benin Republic in August.
"Leadership in a team is not necessarily about the captain's arm band. We're working towards the same objective and it doesn't matter who is the official team captain, " Ezenwa told Completesportsnigeria.com on Friday.
"I just want us to win our matches and qualify for the competition. I wasn't even expecting this honour because there are other equally experienced players in the team.
"All I can say is that on the pitch and off it, we should work for each other so that things will go as planned. All the players are leaders in their own rights."
Chima Akas was confirmed as the vice-captain of the Super Eagles side who will also prosecute the regional 2017 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup in Ghana in September.
Nigeria will face Sierra Leone in a first round knock out match according to the draw conducted on Thursday.
