Ezenwa Ends Speculation Over Future, Joins Kastina United

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, has ended speculations over his future by linking up with Nigeria Professional Football League outfit, Katsina United, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Ezenwa became a free agent following the expiration of his one-year contract with the two-time African champions, Enyimba at the end of last season.

He was close to linking up with Katsina United few weeks ago but the move hit the brickwall over his demand for a staggering N700,000-a-month salary.

Ezenwa completed his medicals on Thursday and has signed a contract with the Changi Boys ahead of the new season.

“We will have the boost of @SuperEagles_ goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa in the forthcoming season as the former @SunshineFCAkure star signed the dotted lines for @fckatsinaunited after passing medicals,” reads a tweet on Katsina United official Twitter handle on Thursday.

He will compete with former Golden Eaglets goalkeeper, Dami Paul, Niger international Kassaly Dauda and Yinka David for the club’s number one position.

Ezenwa has featured for clubs like defunct Ocean Boys, Sunshine Stars and FC IfeanyiUbah in the NPFL.

He was part of Super Eagles team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as well as the home-based Super Eagles team that came second at the 2018 Africa Nations Championship early this year in Morocco.

  • Congratulations to Ezenwa. This news is reassuring however what is less so is the part that reads: “He will compete with former Golden Eaglets goalkeeper, Dami Paul, Niger international Kassaly Dauda and Yinka David for the club’s number one position.”

Ezenwa has shown in the past that he is not good at wrestling number one position away from other contenders.

He was unable to convince the national team handlers that he was good enough to be number one prior to the unveiling of Uzoho. At club level, he would drop to number 3 prior to eventually being shown the exit door – for a goalkeeper that just came back from the World Cup!

Well, I am still glad that he has managed to secure gainful employment. How gainful this will be if he doesn’t play regularly remains to be seen…..

My exact sentiments to @ Deo.
IMy happiness for him was doused immediately I saw names like Dami Paul and Kassaly Dauda. These are exceptionally good goalkeepers if you ask me. Dami was former u17 and u20 no 1 and current no 1 goalkeeper of the Super sand eagles. Kassaly has been no1 for Niger republic for almost 5 years now. For an ezenwa who was 2nd choice to femi thomas at u20 level, 2nd choice to Ambrose vanzekin at u23 level amd wasnt overly convincing when he had the likes of Fatau Dauda and Theo afelokai to compete with, it will be interesting to watch how he proves himself in his new club. It will only all but brighten his chances in the national team and make him a more reliable deputy if/when he eventually rises to the challenge.

  • Katsina United May need to release one of Yinka or Dami as they will be “overloaded” in the goal keeping department. The transfer window closes at he end of December.

But I share the fear that Ezenwa will find it tough to break into the first team
