FA Cup: Iwobi Helps Arsenal Cruise Past Sutton Into Q/Finals

By James Agberebi:

Arsenal booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Emirates FA Cup following a 2-0 away win against non-league club Sutton United on Monday night.

Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi was on from the start for Arsenal but made way for Alexis Sanchez in the second half. Iwobi had a decent match and was involved in a hilarious moment as a half-naked pitch invader went close to the Super Eagles star.

A goal in each half by Lucas Perez and Theo Walcott sealed the win for Arsenal.

The win was Arsenal’s first against a non-league side in the FA Cup since their 5-1 win against Farnborough in the 2002/03 season.

Arsenal will welcome fifth-tier club Lincoln City FC at the Emirates in the quarter-finals.

The early part of the game saw both teams failing to create any meaningful scoring opportunities.

Perez eventually opened the scoring for Arsenal on 27 minutes racing on to a pass before slotting the ball beyond the reach of Ross Worner in goal for Sutton.

Theo Walcott went close for Arsenal in the 29th minute but his long range strike went narrowly over the bar.

With four minutes left in the first half, Iwobi had a chance to double Arsenal’s lead only to see his goal bound strike come off a Sutton defender and went inches wide for a corner.

Sutton almost got back into the game on the stroke of half time following a poor clearance by David Ospina but Nick Bailey couldn’t take advantage.

Prior to the start of the second half Arsenal were forced into a change as Mohamed Elneny went off injured and was replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Arsenal were on the front foot from the start of the second half and deservedly went 2-0 up through Walcott on 55 minutes following a low cross from Nacho Monreal.

Sutton almost pulled a goal back on 60 minutes through skipper Jamie Collins but he couldn’t keep his header from a corner down.

In the 65th minute Roarie Deacon was very close to reducing the deficit but his long range strike came off the cross bar.

Arsenal nearly extended their lead on 69 minutes after a brilliant run from from Oxlade-Chamberlain but Walcott failed to get a contact from close range on his dangerous.

Alexis Sanchez had an opportunity to make it three for Arsenal on 80 minute but his chip went just over the bar.
