Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was suspended while Nigerian youngster Ovie Ejaria made his third English FA Cup appearance for Liverpool who suffered another shock defeat at home to Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Both managers fielded understrength sides but the Reds lost 2-1 to the Championship team four days after crashing out of the English Football League Cup semi-finals to Southampton. It was Liverpool’s third straight home defeat in one week.
First half goals from Richard Stearman and Andreas Weimann secured an impressive win for the Wolves and sealed their berth in the fifth round of the competition.
Ejaria made way in the 74th minute of the defeat for Emre Can as the Reds battled for a replay.
Stearman scored the opener in the first minute of the game when he got his head on Helder Costa’s free kick, steering the ball past Loris Karius to give the visitors a dream start.
The lead was doubled four minutes into the break after a swift counter-attack. Weimann picked up a perfect pass from Costa before rounding off Karius in goal for the Reds.
Divok Origi scored a late goal, tapping in Daniel Sturridge’s header but it was not enough for the hosts to force a replay.
So far in 2017, Liverpool’s only win was against Plymouth Argle in the English FA Cup replay.
They face Chelsea next on Tuesday at Anfield in the Premier League.
