Manchester United qualified for the fourth round of the English FA Cup after defeating hard fighting Championship side Derby County 2-0 at Old Trafford on Friday.
Two late goals in the final five minutes from Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku secured a place in Monday’s draw for the fourth round of the competition for the Red Devils.
Lingard scored the first goal of the game in the 84th minute with a superb half volley from the edge of the Derby box before Lukaku sealed the encounter with a close range finish after playing a clever one two with Anthony Martial. The goal was Lukaku’s 16th of the season in all competitions.
Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata all came close to scoring in the early stages of the game in the first half but Scot Carson denied the trio to ensure Derby went into the interval goalless.
Manchester United had the first attempt on goal through captain Pogba firing a straight shot at Carson in the second minute.
Ander Herrera was the next Manchester United player to come close six minutes later but the Spaniard failed to hit target from a set piece from Rashford.
In the 24th minute,United earned a free-kick on the edge of the Derby box but Mata’s effort was saved brilliantly by Carson. Derby also created a scare as Martin Olsson rose higher to head Alex Pearce’s corner but Sergio Romero tipped the goal bound header over the bar.
Derby grew in confidence and Tom Lawrence was next to force another save from Romero.
In the second half, Jose Mourinho introduced Romelu Lukaku hooking off Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the process but it was Derby who came close to scoring.
