Chelsea defeated 10-man Manchester United 1-0 in the quarter-finals of the Emirates FA Cup at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.
The only goal of the game was scored by N’Golo Kante early in the second half.
It was Kante’s second goal of the season with his first also coming against United in a 4-0 Premier League win earlier in the season.
Super Eagles forward Victor Moses featured from the start before going off for Kurt Zouma in the dying minutes of the game.
The win means Chelsea are now unbeaten in their last 12 games against Manchester United in all competitions (W6 D5), last losing in October 2012.
United started the stronger and were almost rewarded for their good start on 12 minutes through Henrikh Mkhitaryan but his low left-foot strike rolled narrowly off target.
Chelsea began to grow in the game and went very close on 16 minutes only for Eden Hazard’s low strike to be tipped by David De Gea away for a corner.
De Gea was called to action again from the resultant corner as he got down quickly to palm Gary Cahill’s shot away from nestling into the bottom corner.
In the 35th minute United were reduced to 10 men after Ander Herrera was shown his second yellow card for a foul on Hazard.
Following the sending off of Herrera, Chelsea were all over United and almost took the lead on 40 minutes but Moses’ powerful shot from range sailed just over the bar.
Chelsea went all out in the second half and eventually broke the deadlock on 51 minutes through Kante whose low strike from outside the 18-yard box found the bottom right corner.
United had a rare chance to counter and went close but Marcos Rashford couldn’t beat Thibaut Courtois whose stretched leg deflected the ball away for a corner.
In the 62nd minute Willian had a chance to double Chelsea’s lead but his curler from the edge of the box narrowly went over the bar.
Chelsea went close again on 85 minutes following good play from Willian on the right but his ball across United’s goal missed Diego Costa.
Paul Pogba almost equalised for on 82 minutes United only to see his shot from 20 yards go wide of the post.
