Fashanu Wants Eagles Coaching Role For Yobo

–Insists it’s a global trend for ex-players to manage national team

John Fashanu has called on the football governing body in Nigeria NFF to give former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo a backroom role with the national team.

Fashanu said the practice of giving a backroom role to former captains of national teams and even clubsides is a tradition Nigeria has to imbibe.

“We have to go with the global trend, it’s the case in Germany, Holland, England and most clubs in Europe do same. Yobo deserves a role for his service to the national team”, Fashanu said.

Yobo retired after the World cup with the honour of being the first Nigeria player to reach 100 caps for the national team and Fashanu believes he deserve to be kept around the team.

“For Yobo to have amassed 100 caps with Nigeria he needs to be given a role in the team because he has the respect of the players. As the immediate past captain he also have the respect of his teammates,” he told sl10.com.

“Keeping him around will go a long way in motivating players in the team to give their all, knowing fully well they will be appreciated after their career with the national team is over.”

The Super Eagles are presently in camp getting set to take on Congo this weekend in an Africa Nations Cup 2015 qualifiers and Fashanu is optimistic that the Eagles will triumph.

“They have been issues with the federation, the coach’s contract and all manners of distractions but this is Nigeria against Congo, I expect them to win regardless,” he continued.

However, he warned the Eagles not to be complacent because as African champions most teams will be extra motivated to beat them.

“Everybody and every team loves fairytale stories, like we just beat the African champions -int their backyard, so that alone should spur the Eagles not to be complacent knowing full well they are a marked team in Africa,” he concluded.
