Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has won the 2017 Australian Open title after defeating arch rival Rafael Nadal in five sets in a thrilling encounter in Melbourne on Sunday.
Federer triumphed 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to claim a first major since Wimbledon 2012.
The win means Federer has now won his fifth Australian Open title and also his 18th Grand Slam title.
Federer got off to the best possible start by taking the first set 6-4.
Unperturbed about going a set down, Nadal took the second set 6-3 to level up.
In the third set Federer stormed to a commanding 6-1 win to go two sets to one over Nadal.
For the second time Nadal fought is way back into the game taking the fourth set 6-3.
And in the deciding fifth set, Federer held his nerve to overcome Nadal 6-3.
