Presdient Infantino Reveals FIFA To Review Monthly Ranking System, Denies ‘Corruption’ Tag

By Kayode Ogundare in Moscow:
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has revealed that the body has plans to review and simplify the monthly FIFA Ranking which has been hotly contested as not reflecting the true strength of footballing countries, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Speaking at the Media Centre here in Moscow on Friday morning, Infantino conceded that the rankings could be better and promised that a more competitive system will soon be introduced.
He said: “We are not unaware of the fact that the rankings have not reflected the true position of participating nations and I can assure you that it will be changed for the future. There is the complex issue of countries from different continents who do not get to play each other. Then we must also change the weightings of friendly games as well as look at the differences between Confederations to have a fairly accurate representation.”
The rankings were introduced in December 1992, and eight teams (Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain) have held the top position, of which Brazil have spent longest ranked first.
The FIFA boss also denied that the organisation is full of corrupt people as evidenced by the corruption scandals that have riddled the body.
He added: “I think we should not get things wrong. FIFA is itself a victim of corruption and the courts in the United States have agreed with us on this. The culprits misused their positions in FIFA to perpetrate this evil. This does not mean FIFA itself is corrupt but we are going to deal with all of these going forward.”

  • I agree with Infantino on the nerd to have a new format on this ranking thing. We can start with these 32 teams that are to play the WC. The winner of the WC should automatically be no 1, runner up is no 2, winner of the bronze should be no 3 and so on. So we already have 1-32. Others can follow.

  • Yes change the format

l have always believed that when it comes to ratings, Fifa is opening corrupt. As a resident in New York area where the corruption case which is in High Court is still pending, National Rating is obviously one of the areas they normally spread their corrupting influence. l am a bit relieved to learn that the New Member plans to do something about it in the near future.
