Gallant Super Eagles Bow Out After Defeat To Argentina

Gallant Super Eagles Bow Out After Defeat To Argentina

By Nnamdi Ezekute in St Petersburg:

The Super Eagles have crashed out of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup after losing 2-1 to Argentina in their final Group D game here in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the first half before Victor Moses equalised from the penalty spot. The Barcelona star’s goal was the 100th of this summer’s World Cup.

But late into the game Marcos Rojo scored the winner to send Argentina into the last 16.

The win for Argentina was their fifth straight win against the Super Eagles at the World Cup.

The last time the Super Eagles crashed out in the group stage was at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Argentina now join Croatia who beat Iceland 2-1 in the round of 16.

Croatia will now face Denmark who finished second in Group C while Argentina will meet France.

Ahmed Musa had the Super Eagles’ first attempt on goal on eight minutes but his shot from outside went just over the bar.

Argentina eventually opened the scoring through Messi on 14 minutes who controlled a long pass from Ever Banega before shooting past Francis Uzoho.

In the 26th minute Uzoho made a big save as he quickly came off his line to prevent Gonzalo Higuian from doubling Argentina lead following a defence splitting pass from Messi.

Messi almost made it 2-0 from a free-kick close to the box on 34 minutes but his well struck effort got the slightest finger tip touch from Uzoho and came off the post.

Before the start of the second half, the Super Eagles made the game’s first change with Odion Ighalo replacing the ineffective Iheanacho.

The Super Eagles were back on level terms on 51 minutes thanks to Moses on from the penalty spot after Javier Mascherano fouled Balogun inside the box.

In the 71st minute Wilfred Ndidi hit a superb strike outside which went just over the bar.

Ighalo had a chance to put Nigeria ahead in the 76th minute but he hit the ball wide.

There were calls for a penalty by the Super Eagles players after Marcos Rojo was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the box but after consulting with VAR the referee did not give it.

Oghenekaro Etebo almost scored from a free-kick on 86 minutes but his effort hit the side netting.

Argentina went 2-1 up on 86 minutes thanks to Rojo who slammed in a cross from the right.

who wan get d hard feelings b4? When all of a suden coach tell us na 2022 world cup qualifyin match he dey play 4, to prove it, he carry ighalo put, me i go cum dey get hard feeling? Thunda fire hard feeling there!

  • gowetok 4 months ago

Ighalo again. Empty net and he baloom over the bar. Same story in 2009.Forumites have ask Rohr not to play Ighalo but he will never hear. The truth is we went to the world cup without a natural striker. We were exposed wen it matters

  • They did their best but hard luck. The most painful is why does it have to be Argentina all the time God???

  • srlbusayo 4 months ago

Why will the coach use Ighalo
..He saw his lazy impact in the first match, his world-class chance as a die-minute substitute which he threw away, and yet still used him… Nwankwo would have made better use of those two God-given chances…..

  • Buhari 4 months ago

Rohr destroyed us by fielding Ighalo of people. Someone that even unborn children know is not good. He kept Iwobi on bench till 90mins. I don’t know what Etebo was doing in that match. Let’s just forget football. Why did we bother to play qualifiers if we know we are preparing for 2022. They are all mad.

  • I blame Rohr , if he had used simy or iwobi instead of ighalo we would have scored.

Kept saying it over and over again.

  • Sanya adebambo 4 months ago

I dont like this Nigerian altitude of always wanting to give excuse. Why didnt igalo score that ball, why are we waiting for penalty when we could have converted the ball. Igalo did not deserve any spot in that team. Rorh is a confused old man and should be told to go and retire. Why did he keep our darling attacking ebuehi that co change the fortune of last game? While not an ealry iwobi sub for a tired etebo or mikel? Am just disappointed as usual. God bless Nigeria

The coach was the ultimate killer of this match. Pls of what value is a striker who has not scored or assisted a single goal in ur last 10 matches. We all saw Simy against Congo, just as we’ve been seeing him in the serie A. Even if he was to bring on a striker on in the 46th minute it shouldnt have been ighalo. We needed someone who could hold up play effectively upfront for us and we had a 2m tall simy who is built for that. Argentina coach brought on 3 attacking players to stretch our defence….wah was our coache’s response to that……Nothing. 3 tiring defenders against 3 attacking argentines + Lionel Messi. I would have expected a switch to a 4-5-1 or a 4-4-2 so that we can have 2 lines of defense and wide players who can drop back to provide support for the full backs. The less said of Ighalo the better. I can bet there is some kind of unholy alliance going on btw him and the coach.
I really feel for the boys. they gave their all. If only they had started giving their all from the very 1st match. Its just a reflection of how we like to do thing in nigeria….we leave things till wen its too late to redeem

    • Absolute rubbish analysis. This Dr Dumb knows nothing about football. Why not write a book? Olodo.

  • [email protected] 2010/2018worldcup. I just dey remember goal scored by Usman mohamed against atletico in uyo.We cry shout but dey said no.it not possble for dem to invite d guys. Secondary school boy wil score d chance miss by igallo. If it was Messi or Ronaldo dat ve dat type of a big chance.

  • akpokiniovo Sunday 4 months ago

Ighalo failed the Country. Disappointing to see him miss those very clear chances. Couldn’t any of the two Juniors have scored those goals?

  • As much as i am totally against Ighalo for not scoring those goals but I don’t think it is the coach fault. Yes he may have faith in him no crime abt that. He put him in other to score those chances but he disappointed him so how is that the coach fault. So many times fans do call for players to be dropped e.g Xhaka and others at Arsenal but Wenger do ignore cos he is d one that train them and he knows what they re doing in training so pls stop this Rohr using of Ighalo he knows him and that was why keeps using him ahead of other strikers. Even KANU mentioned him prior to d competition as one of our best player. Truly d defeat was painful but pls let’s move forward better days ahead.

You’re wrong brother , the blame is on stupid and headless Rohr!!..how dare him destroyed the joy of 190m Nigerians?…every duck and Harry knows that Ighola is useless up front and we have tested strikers like simmy and Iwobi and yet this deaf coach refused to feature them at a critical moment of the game and you said I shouldn’t blame him ? I believe Rohr is a homosexual and he has unholy relationship with Ighalo!!..Imagine being on the receiving end and he made only one substitute!!…what as Egbuehi , Iwobi and Simmy doing at the sub bench when he could have removed Idowu for Egbuehi , Etebo of Iwobi and Ihenacho for simmy?…even making those changes could have given us some respite and kill time !!…this coach is evil and wicked!!

  • i thanks everyone on this platform and CSN for your unwavery support for the Super Eagles before, during and after our 2018 Russia world cup adventure, it was heart felt moment for me because seeing talents like Etebo, Ndidi,Iwobi, co and my surprise player of the tournament Ahmed Musa, most especially our half -castes showing us love by representing one of their parents country despite not being brought here, is worth acknowledge, i love you all, it was painful we crashed out in the first stage of the of the competition, i will sincerely miss those players mention above because of their proving talent , though i am not a fan of European club football but i pray almighty God should elevate each and everyone of you in your respective football club and all spheres of Human endeavour , seeing your faces against Argentina i was filled with emotion, feel like crying for the guys because they really put up their best, which i can say, maybe not up to the task ,see you guys during the nations cup qualifier. God bless Nigeria.

First of all looking at the whole world cup there were things that were not added up for instance
What’s the definition of experience if super Eagles having gone for five world cups couldn’t brace up for the six. Secondly did the coach want to tell us that despite his so called scouting for players he couldn’t find a creative player or guys who were fast with the ball or a striker who’s agile and wants to win ? Igalo was only in the team becaise he scored juat a qualifier goal . Wow!
Mikel is the only number 10
How come rhe nwakali Brothers were not included
Why do we have youth football and players to try for rhe future . Why do we have to lose players like David Alaba and Dele Alli when they came to Nigeria to play for the country only for NFF to play politics on selection . Why , why and why ?
This is not about they tried
This is about what’s at stake after all these participations
    Maradona was just mocking us
We gave Argentina a greek gift
And you ppl say they tried
    Seriously !

I don’t know whether we understand the meaning of entering the world cup to win and move beyond our expectations. What’s the extent of having to win under 17 and having to produce under 20s if we don’t do our work well of bringing the gap of countries winning the world cup .

    Rohr didn’t do well
    I’m sorry to say this
A defender who’s slow in getting Messi
A young keeper who’s gittery in stopping s Messi goal
A team with not accurate pointman who lays excuse of his failure to score only to be talking about penalties and a coach who did bad timing of substitution .
And a team who don’t know what’s necessary in preparing for a world cup . Set pieces ,zero
    Nack for goal crap
And winning for pride and country
    Zero .

We’ve learnt lessons , but did we actually work on them after all these years of participation .
This is a wake up call
I sure hope they are awake in seeing this and doing something about it
Next world cup is at the UAE. It’s up to them and the nation cup qualifier . Hmm ! Let’s see what happens.
    Nigeria we Hail thee !

Is obvious that the referee and our coach gave Argentina the night.

I congratulate the Boys for playing there heart out.

To kill the game 80min when Argentina was introducing more attack. Eagle coach should have park the boxxx..maybe 5 4 1 formation

Finally: even with VAR, the referee just decide to deny Nigeria and Africa a clean PK

    • Emmanuel 4 months ago

Spot on bro! THE LONG PRACTICE OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION FIFA POLITICS AGAINST AFRICAN TEAMS IS WELL AND ALIVE.

THAT IS WHY NFA/NFF MUST VEHEMENTLY COMPLAIN TO FIFA ABOUT THE REF’S DECISION NOT TO AWARD US A PK DESPITE CLEAR & CONVINCING VAR EVIDENCE OF A HAND BALL BY MACHERANO IN THE BOX.

WHY BOTHER WITH VAR TECHNOLOGY IF A CROOKED REF DECIDES TO KNOWINGLY IGNORE OR NULLIFY THE OFFICIAL VIDEO EVIDENCE?

THIS REF’S ACTION WILL COST NIGERIA A LOT OF MONEY FOR NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE PLAYOFFS.
WE MUST NOT IGNORE THIS ISSUE!!!

Read the rule book, a hand can be unintentional. No plot against Africa. Just footbal. Well derserved Argentina

  • Hautside 4 months ago

Moses shouldnt have ended the match!!! They needed a goal, they removed a defender ( number 3) and added an extra attacker, a good coach should have responded to that change! How do you have higuan,Aguero, messi in d frontline and you still held on with the tired players. Sampoli needed to change a defender for an attacker and he saw that moses was weak going forward! Why didn’t he change from the right back where Mr Musa was.

Guardiola, mou and oda good coaches would have sacrificed Igahlo(as a mistaken sub) for a Defensive mid(ogu) and moses for RB.Then change the formation to 5-4-1

Coaches should read games and not stick to a formation bcos they have not conceded or are still defending well.
I hate to say..” They tried after every world cup”…When will countries like Brazil,Argentina start defending against African teams? Must we always be the defensive teams when we have the talents!!

Africa still has a long way to go?

  • Now that Rohr has messed up this golden opportunity, who takes over as the coach? I guess it’s now the turn of an indigenous coach.

Samson siasia said it category that Mr Rohr will mess up and we will have to start from square one again. In four years time, new sets of players will come in and the same story will be told again… We have a young team, let’s get them ready for the next world cup in 2026. This is Nigeria!!!

  • ovoke 4 months ago

The boys gave their all but the tactical ineptitude of Mr Rohr killed us. First of all, Ighalo has no business in that game. I don’t know the kind of favour ighalo is enjoying from the coach, a striker that has proven repeatedly that he is goal shy, shouldn’t have a place in such an important game. There is nothing like having faith in him not after enduring his goal droughts all these while and we still keep maintaining a worthless faith. You don’t experiment at the world cup. Ighalo is a major contributor to our failure at this world cup. Secondly, like many of us rightly observed, the coach stock to his earlier formation and exhausted players when it was obvious that a change of formation and tired players were needed. Sampoli needed a win and he sacrificed a defender for a striker to add more pressure to our tiring wall, but our dummy coach stood there  like a statue watching when players like ebuehi, ogu, Joel obi or even onazi who should have replaced tired etebo, moses, omeruo were wasting on the bench. Even Bryan idowu who struggled through out the game ought to have been replaced with echigiele. What a coach? Only for him to begin to introduce iwobi and simmy when it was over, what does he expect them to do? For me this rohr is a big waste of money.

  • Coach Rohr should stay on to guide this young team to success. Continuity is the word. AFCON & 2022 World Cup

    • Steve 4 months ago

Rohr is weak and a bias coach!!…he has lost my respect for him, let him go and fuck Ighola as he likes !!..stupid coach !!

  • Bomboy 4 months ago

Thank u Mr. Rohr for the job u have done, but it is time to go!

We need a more passionate coach with some self belief, not one that keeps complaining that he has a young team that will be ready to take on the world in 2022.

As for u Pinnick, u hav to look out for a new coach if you want to keep your job. The vultures will be calling for your head now, so do the right thing!

  • Emmanuel 4 months ago

Germans are very stubborn by nature, especially if they have made up their minds. Also, maybe someone higher up is telling Rohr what to do. We may never know.
This is a good SE squad, that i have seen in a long time as far as some offensive scheme is concerned. They just need to increase their overall TEAM SPEED, AND COHESIVENESS, which is woefully slower than the really good teams. Team speed was severely lagging against Croatia, better than Iceland’s, slower vs Argentina that controlled the midfield throughout the game, while we played defense most of the game. We needed to be quick to the ball, pass off the ball quickly, learn how to relieve ball pressure by one, or multiple opponents, etc. Keep our heads down when we take in-step shots at goal; ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST 1, 2 BETTER, PLAYERS IN OPPONENT’S BOX TO RECIEVE A QUICK CUT BACK PASS BY MOSES, OR MUSA FROM THE WINGS. We need to Finish attack drives strongly WITH A MEANINGFUL CLEAR DESIGN. NO WILD SHOTS HITTING THE SIDE NET, OR SAILING HIGH OVER THE POST.
THESE ARE NOT EXPERIENCE RELATED ISSUES BUT MOSTLY FUNDAMENTAL INDIVIDUAL SKILL ISSUES. THE COACH NEEDS TO REITARATE & COACH THEM CONSTANTLY. PLAYERS NEED TO PLACE/LOCATE BALLS EXACTLY WHERE THEY NEED TO BE ON A TARGET, ESPECIALLY AT GOAL. WATCH RONALDO, MESSI, or BECKHAM FREE KICKS AT GOAL. They practice these skills very often. THEY DON’T OFTEN WASTE THEM.
WE WERE DEFEATED BY THE REF TODAY, NOT BY ARGENTINA.

I’M  GLAD THIS IS MESSI’S  LAST WORLD UP RUN.

NIGERIA SE TEAM WITH A VERY QUICK PACED OVERALL TEAM SPEED, WILL BE DEADLY WITH THE CURRENT YOUNG TALENTED PLAYERS, IF,
AND ONLY IF HANDLED CORRECTLY. THEY NEED TO PLAY FASTER WITH MORE URGENCY FOR 90 MIMS, AND NOT 87MINS.

FINALLY, THE COACH NEED TO INSTILL SITUATIONAL AWARENESS INTO ALL THE PLAYERS TO UNDERSTAND & TO PLAY SMART FOOTBALL. NO STUPID UNECESSARY FOULS IN YOUR BOX, OR NEAR IT. ENOUGH SAID.

  • Emmanuel 4 months ago

How many remembered when Messi faced Enyeama one-on-one at goal 3 seperate occassions, and could not score against Enyeama. Messi walked over to Enyeama, and shook his hands.
I believe our young  very talented 19 year old goalie needs to sit down with Enyeama someday, and have coffee, or tea. Just a thought.

  • Emmanuel 4 months ago

I cannot comment on Coach Rohr’s coaching skills, or ability; Who he should  play, or not play. It is more important to play the best 11 players that gives you the best chance to win anytime. That includes  knowing your opponent very very well.
Pairing your strengths against  their weaknesses, and vice versa. Then game planning, using the right players for each game situation. Also involved is watching a lot of game films of your opponents, so you can game plan effectively. That means some players you expect  to  start one game, might not be needed next game, etc.

THE BEST PERSONS TO JUDGE ANY COACH ARE THE PLAYERS THEMSELVES. THEY KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON MUCH BETTER. THE FANS ALSO DO HAVE GOOD POINTS TOO.
I STILL  BELIEVE THAT WHAT WE COULD USE  AS A TEAM, ARE GOOD SPORTS PSYCHOLOGISTS TO INSTILL GREAT CONFIDENCE IN THESE YOUNG PLAYERS, SO THEY CAN ALWAYS PLAY AT THEIR PEAK GOING FORWARD.

FINALLY, NFA/NFF BRASSES NEED TO STOP MEDDLING WITH COACHING DECISIONS.
LET THE COACH COACH!!! JUST GIVE HIM THE TOOLS TO DO HIS JOB. AMEN!

  • Emmanuel 4 months ago

Albeit that there was no guarantee that early, and more substitutions would have changed the ulmate result, I agree that the substitution process was a bit slow, and inadequate. Can any of our journalists please ask the coach why the slow of substitution?
WHY WAS ONE GUY MARKING THE WORLD’S MOST PROLIFIC STRIKER?

DID THE COACH WATCH GAME TAPES IN PREPARING TO SEE HOW OTHER TEAMS DEFENDED ARGENTINA IN GROUP D???
    IF NO, WHY NOT?

WITH 3 MINS LEFT, WHY WAS ROJO LEFT FREE IN THE BOX ON A CROSS???

THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS WE NEED FROM THE COACH. WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT HIS RATIONALE WAS FOR EACH QUESTION.
AFTER WE HEAR HIS ANSWERS, MAYBE WE CAN MAKE MORE APPROPRIATE & INTELLIGENT RESPONSES. FANS, WOULDN’T YOU AGREE?

Will the NFA/NFF FILE A COMPLAINT WITH FIFA AGAINST THE REF FOR IGNORING AN OBVIOUS HAND BALL PENALTY THAT WOULD HAVE LIKELY ADVANCED OUR SE TO THE PLAYOFF STAGE?

  • Emmanuel 4 months ago

Great save by SE Goalie on Messi’s Free kick. That was spectacular.

  • Abdulrazak 4 months ago

At 10 minutes to the end of the match, Gernot Rohr should have, in my own opinion, brought in Ogu for Etebo and Iwobi for Ahmed  Musa. The Argentines made three substitutions because they knew that only a win will do but WHAT did our coach do to counter this? NOTHING. Then after they got their second goal, he made two substitutions. I had a lot of respect for Rohr but not anymore. Argentina did not win the match yesterday. Gernot Rohr gave it to them on a platter.

  • Tajudeen 4 months ago

Thks Mr Rohr, i think Ighalo fail you because he only think of himself when Nigeria score the second goal against Iceland instead of him to celebrate with his team mate he walked straight to the coach to put him on the pitch… Nigerians coach should stop collecting bribe from players because it affect our young talent to show their skills
