Gerrard: Sadiq Will Be Ready To Make Rangers Debut In Pre-Season Friendly Vs Wigan

By Johnny Edward:
Umar Sadiq will make his debut for Glasgow giants, Rangers in Sunday’s pre-season friendly clash against English Championship side Wigan Athletic, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Sadiq joined Scottish giants, Rangers on a one year loan deal from Italian side, AS Roma.

The 21 year old Sadiq who will play no part in Rangers’ Thursday’s Europa League, Second Round, first leg encounter against Croatian club, NK Osijek, after he was left out of the match day squad is short of fitness according to his coach Steven Gerard.

Other players who were left out of the squad include Scott Arfield, Declan John, Lee Wallace, Jordan Rossiter and Graham Dorrans.

“He’s (Sadiq) is probably a couple of weeks away in terms of being ready for real game time,” Gerrard told a media conference ahead of his side’s game against NK Osijek.

“You may see him at the weekend for a certain part of the Wigan game, but we felt it was best for him to stay behind and be pushed by the physical trainers.”

“We have to make sure when the supporters see these players, they are ready to perform at a high level fitness-wise. It would be doing them a disservice if we put them in when they are not really ready.”

  • Good talk coachee, sadiq will make u proud

  • The old firm derby will a have renewed interest to me this coming season thanks to the signing of Sadiq Umar by Rangers.

With Stephen Gerard expected to play attacking football similar to that of Jungen Klopp, I can’t wait to see him face his old manager who is now in charge of Celtic with our own Umar leading the attack.

In one of the derbies several seasons ago, Sone Aluko (remember him?) put up a performance of his life as Rangers ran away 3:2 winners against Celtic in a cracking game of football.

I am now looking forward to see how Sadiq Umar will rise to such an occasion. I am hoping he will put up a performance similar to that of Sone Aluko on March 2012.

Reflecting on the great goal he scored on the day, Aluko said: “It was pure instinct which made me drive to get one-on-one with the keeper. It was great to see the ball hit the net, and now on each anniversary of the goal, I get tweets about it from Rangers fans. I get at least five or six videos of it sent to me every year, too.”

It’s now up to Umar to repay the faith that Gerard will repose on him in months to come.
