Ghana head coach Kwesi Appiah has tipped the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Teranga Lions of Senegal to cause upsets at the FIFA 2018 World Cup which kicked off on Thursday.
Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal as well as Nigeria are the nations representing Africa in Russia.
Nigeria are in Group D with Croatia, Argentina and Iceland in Group and will begin their group campaign against Croatia on Saturday while Senegal will be up against Colombia, Japan and Poland in Group H.
Appiah, 57, who was reappointed Ghana coach last year, said the trio of Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt will also perform but singled out Nigeria and Senegal for special mention.
“Most of the African countries at the World Cup have got very young squads. And I believe they can surprise many at the tournament,” Appiah, who led the Black Stars to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, told Ghana Soccernet.
“Nigeria and Senegal are doing well with young players who want to achieve something.
“They only need the right mentality for the tournament and they can cause a surprise.”
Ghana failed to qualify for this year’s World Cup after finishing third in a group that was topped by Egypt.
