GOtv Max Cup: Nwakali, Torres On Target As Atletico Outscore Super Eagles

GOtv Max Cup: Nwakali, Torres On Target As Atletico Outscore Super Eagles

By Kayode Ogundare in Uyo:

The Super Eagles B put up a spirited effort but it was not enough has they were edged 3-2 by recently crowned Europa League champions Atletico Madrid in the GOtv Max Cup at the Godwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom Stadium on Tuesday.

Atletico paraded stars like Jan Oblak, Juanfran, Thomas Party, Fernando Torres and Kevin Gameiro.

Super Eagles B had the likes of Kelechi and Chidiebere Nwakali, Emem Eduok and Femi Thomas.

Arsenal youngster Nwakali and Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medal winner Usman Mohammed got Nigeria’s goals.

Angel Correa, Fernando Torres and Borja Garces were the scorers for Atletico.

Oblak was the first to be called to action as early as the third minute but produced a brilliant save to prevent Atletico from going behind.

Atletico launched an attack of their own and went close to opening the scoring on eight minute only for Gameiro to see his effort go inches wide.

Atletico carved out another scoring opportunity in the 20th minute, this time through Correa, but his goal bound strike was stopped by Thomas.

The deadlock was eventually broken on 32 minutes through Arsenal youngster Nwakali whose screamer flew past Oblak into the top corner to put the Super Eagles’ B side 1-0 ahead.

Atletico responded a minute later through Correa with a wonderful strike to  make it 1-1.

In the 43rd minute, the Super Eagles B should have retaken the lead only for Destiny Ashadi to miss an open net despite good play from Kadiri Samad.

Before the commencement of the second half, Atletico made five changes with Fernando Torres among the players brought on.

Torres almost made an instant impact as he tried a long range effort which Thomas did well enough to stop from going in.

Atletico went close again on 55 minutes but they were denied by Thomas who stopped Gameiro’s effort following a pass from Machin Vitolo.

Atletico’s positive start to the second half eventually paid off as Torres headed in a cross on 64 minutes to put his side 2-1 up.

The Super Eagles side were back on level terms with 10 minutes remaining as substitute Mohammed made it 2-2 after brilliantly beating his marker.

But in the 85th minute Borja restored Atletico’s lead netting the third goal to bring score to 3-2 to Atletico.

Impressive performance by super eagles even though they lost.
Poor goal keeping..and chances they wasted cost them the match. Wish our team A can string passes like this.
    Kudos guys!

  • This is the right way to loose actually. Great team.

Wow! The joy this guys mase me to forget that we lost the match sef. The Nwakali brothers were on fire. I just thank God that Coach GR was there to see this guys play. If Mikel should retire today, I have full confidence in Kelechi Nwakali same with Musa Mohammed

I ve said it several times Rohr selections is not entirely based on current forms, skills or soccer techniques, Apart from Mikel, Kelechi is more skillful and more  talented than half of Rohr  Super eagle players .

Oga Sunnyb. You don start again. Kelechi is one for the future, although I will agree with you that he’s way better than Mikel Agu. I’m sure some of them will train with the main team before the DRC match.

  • Ayphillydegreat 6 months ago

IMHO. Musa Muhammed is the heir apparent to that right back position. It’s just unfortunate for him that he was not a regular at Istanbul Basakshire at the time before his imminent move to Lokomotive Plodvar in Bulgaria. If he had been playing in Bulgaria from the beginning he could’ve made the RB is own. The Nwakali brothers are a near future prospect for the SuperEagles, particularly Kelechi that boy is the next Mikel if not better because he can score goals from free kicks and long range efforts. I’m happy with the team performance overall. I hope the main SuperEagles team going to Russia will play with this kind of enthusiasm. This is a great way to start preparing for the AFCON next year. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

If am Rohr i will play a friendly match between Super Eagle Team A vs Team B and see how things works out am pretty sure Nwakali Brothers are far better than some names in our Mildfied selected for World cup. Rohr need to make some late adjustment. I prefer creative midfield than defensive midfield that’s my option…

Yes!!! #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE TO THE FUTURE…
The future our national team with Nwakali is very bright. No qualms if Mikel Obi retires anytime… We’ve got K E L E C H I

I was very impressed with the Nwakali brothers . They should be given more chances in our post-world cup matches. Kelechi is the closest guy to Mikel n Iwobi in terms of creativity. Never seeing a goal like his from a Nigerian player in a long long time. I feel Rohr was somehow rigid with his selection. There is no way some players who played today shouldn’t have being in that team. Let’s see what happens after the WC. Again, I would have wished that the team that played today should have being 100% made up of players with realistic chances of making the team in the future. Dressers, Sidiq, Onuachi, the Nwakali brothers, Samuel Kalu, Anderson Esiti, Usman, Imoh Ezekiel, Ikechukwu, Omoyele, Olayinka, Ajagun, Bonaventure, Musa Muhammed, Ifeanyi, Fernando Adi, Kehinde, Fred Friday, Ryan Sanusi, and so on. I know some may not make it due club commitment and injury , but at least, we can see and weigh their chances of making the team in the future.

  • Torres must like playing and scoring with headers against Nigeria (Lol).

This match was always going to re-ignite debate on Rohr’s World Cup selection squad particularly as one or two players caught the eye with superb displays.

For me, I will like to congratulate the organisers of this match for two things:

    1) Bringing such a prestigious team like Atletico Madrid to Nigeria.
    2) Allowing our local lads and a selection of foreign based players to continue to remind the world that Nigeria will remain a force to reckon with in world football for years to come.

  • With the kind of performance displayed by Kelechi Nwakali today, truth be told, he is supposed to be in the main team. But at least it is comforting that in the very near future we can depend on him and Iwobi as creative midfielders. The two goals scored by our team B today….fantastic is definitely an understatement to describe them.

Oh my goodness. I just watched the highlight of the match now and I will say kudos to Eagles team B. I have said it here times without number that this Nwakeli junior is what is lacking in the Super Eagles A team.

The camera man showed coach Rohr immediately after Nwakeli junior scored the 1st goal of the match and Mr. Rohr was laughing. He knew that this guy has a huge talent and he deserves to be at the world cup.

How about the second goal? Hmm… That goal brings the memories of Jay Jay Okocha goal against Khan. That goal would called “KASALA” lol. It’s left to coach Rohr to make his decision on both Usman and Nwakeli Junior before it is to late.

Even, OMERUO, EHINACHO, EBUEHI AND CO STOOD UP FOR USMAN MUHAMMED GOAL.

For me, coach Salisu Yussuf killed the match. Why? He should have sub the goalkeeper and some of the defenders.

Africa coaches still have a long way to go.

Atletico Madrid used their experience to win the match period.

Experience really matter most and this is my concern about our main team that going to the world cup.

Except if we are deceiving deceive ourselves. We should leave the future for God and do the right thing now. I still believes that the 30 men list still need adjustments weather we like it or not. But if Coach Rohr failed to changed his mind, the results will be out soon. We have everything at our disposal but the people involved doesn’t care but if they don’t, we do.

I can’t wait to see the final list. Coach Rohr is very smart though. Anything can still happen before the world cup. Please Mr. Rohr wake up and do the right thing. God bless Nigeria!!!

Kelechi nwakali should be invited to super Eagles team without further delay! Sublime and magical passes, a stunning and screamer goal getter. Coach Rohr hmmmm, kelechi is the truth because you and pinnick amaju can’t hid this talented player while uche agbo and mikel Agu are on our world cup list. Kelechi is better than Agbo and Agu mikel even john ogu. So Coach Rohr pls call him up with immediate effect please. It shows our so called scouts have been lazing about in Europe if they couldn’t spot real talent like kelechi.

I agree with you @Bestsports. Even if it’s to at least train with the main team. He should be in the SuperEagles without further delay. In 1994 Kanu, Taribo and Tijani Babangida were called up by Westerhoff during training camp. They played in the friendly against Sweden and distinguished themselves. Though they didn’t make the final 23 to the USA, but they eventually became global superstars. They won Africa its first ever Olympic gold in football two years later. After watching the game over and over again I believe there are at least 4 players in that game that deserves to be in training camp with the main SuperEagles. The Nwakali brothers, Musa Muhammed and Usman who scored the second goal. However, I’m glad that we have some players that can step in anytime they’re called upon and most of the players that played against Atletico can still be a part of the Olympics in 2020 and the AFCON next year. @Josiah I hear you!!! #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#
