Henry: How Kanu, Ikpeba Taught Me Pidgin English

By James Agberebi: Legendary Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has revealed how he learnt pidgin English from his former Nigerian club teammates Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba.

Henry was teammates with Ikpeba at AS Monaco from 1994 to 1999 before teaming up with Kanu at Arsenal from 1999 to 2004.

Speaking during question and answer session at his unveiling as Guinness Nigeria PLC campaign ambassador on Sunday in Victoria Island, Lagos, the former French Ligue 1, Premier League and Spanish LaLiga winner said he did well despite finding it difficult sometimes.

“It was funny because I used to hear some words in the dressing room when Kanu was talking and Victor Ikpeba was talking sometimes with his friends on the phone. However it was a bit easier for me because I just had to read it. Also, I had some Nigerian friends in London. So that was how it came about.

“Though some of the words were a bit diffuclt for me, I tried. All I remember was that anytime I sit with Kanu he is like ‘how body?’ (when Kanu is on the phone) and he used to say ‘body dey’.”
