HEROIC EFFORT: How Super Eagles Rated Vs Argentina

Completesportsnigeria.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU appraises the performance of Super Eagles players in the 2-1 defeat against Argentina in their Group D clash at the 2018 FIFA World Cup…

FRANCIS UZOHO 7/10
Conceded twice in the game despite having little to do. The young goalkeeper will need to work on his ball distribution ability but he was alert and made some key saves

LEON BALOGUN  6/10
He was one of Nigeria’s top performers on the night. The centre-back put up a solid showing despite relentless pressure from the Argentines.

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG 6/10
Had a torrid time stopping Gonzalo Higuain but still put in a decent showing.

KENNETH OMERUO  6/10
Lost Lionel Messi for the first goal but recovered from the early setback to prove his importance to the team especially in the second half.

VICTOR MOSES 5/10
Not one of his performances for the Super Eagles despite grabbing a goal in the game. The Chelsea man was at fault for Argentina’s second goal scored by Marcos Rojo.

BRYAN IDOWU  6/10
The Amker Perm of Russia defender  was solid at the back but didn’t offer much going forward.

WILFRED NDIDI 7/10
Came alive  after the break following a tepid first half. He was close to getting a goal with his well struck shot almost hitting the net.

MIKEL OBI 7/10
A better performance from the captain who came alive like most of his teammates in the second half.

OGHENEKARO ETEBO 7/10
He was at his combative best in the game. Came close to  registering his first goal of the competition with his second half free kick nearly sailing into the net.

KELECHI IHEANACHO 4/10
Put up a shambolic performance and was duly substituted after the break.

AHMED MUSA 8/10
Lively as ever. He was a torn in the flesh of the Argentina defenders. He was Nigeria’s best player on the night

SUBSTITUTES
ODION IGHALO 5/10
The China-based forward added bite to the Super Eagles attack following his introduction but missed two gilt-edged chances that would have aided the Super Eagles qualification into the second round.

      @ Chydon,

This is exactly the kind of reaction that kept Nigeria far away from the top playing nations. Did Mikel n co not justify their inclusion.how cn mikel retire wheen we need him.Has Mesi ,Modrick, etc retire? did the coach not do his best, even though he ought to have defended during the last minutes.you are now talking because we lost in error what if we were beaten flat like those yes hen we have not reach this level in Wworld football.. look at h writer,he hates Moses so much. If not for Moses, di-maria could have wreck havoc,Moses held him.He cant do that and play much because that was their main plan.Thy pln o keep Di maria so that Moses can go foward. To react this way is biased and unpatriotic .Nigeria Team need to stay together for several years. This tam to m is superb.

  • Was he d one that fluffed the chances. Let’s try to accept defeat any coach could have lost the match like that even Mourinho, Guardiola name it. We have seen things like this in so many matches in this competition. Luck was against us his team played well stop accusing this man is not fair to him. No coach in the world will do what he did with this team without luck like what we had today.

  • Football is a game of luck and most time team win with that… U people always talk as if u will do better if it were u

  • I dont like this Nigerian altitude of always wanting to give excuse. Why didnt igalo score that ball, why are we waiting for penalty when we could have converted the ball. Igalo did not deserve any spot in that team. Rorh is a confused old man and should be told to go and retire. Why did he keep our darling attacking ebuehi that co change the fortune of last game? While not an ealry iwobi sub for a tired etebo or mikel? Am just disappointed as usual. God bless Nigeria

  • yes u are not d only disappointed bro it is what it is d coach and d players did their best but not enough not d best of time to point fingers live goes on…

Argentina ranked 5th Nigeria 48. Qualified in style . These boys are young and the future . Too many had expectations beyond belief . The boys did their best . Any team could have lost . That’s what makes the game Intrestjng . Eagles lost to Argentina with the best ever set of Eagles . Ruifia , Keshi Siasia. Same score . These boys have given their best . The goal keeper was condemned by manny jet he made no mistakes . The coach was laughed at before he began . The team was written off after losing a few friendlies. These boys can win the Next African Cup if Nations . Let’s give them a chance

Super Eagles tried but lost due to tactical indiscipline and inexperience. Odion Ighalo had 2 golden chance to immortalize himself and he fluffed them.
He will always be remembered like Yakubu Aiyegbeni that failing us at the crucial moment. GR should have made tactical changes at least 20minutes to the end of the game and compelled the boys to hold the ball and run out the time/game but he developed a brain freeze. He was too afraid of the Argentines even as a coach. Very livid and inexperience display in the last 10minutes of the match made Nigeria to lose that match.Repeat of Italy vs Nigeria in 1994. We never learnt from our past

Before we blame the coach, ighalo or whatever, my question is ” why was that penalty not given to Nigeria?”, there is a reason for that. Hmmmmmmm.

I ve said  it several times Iheanacho, Ighalo, Onazi, Joel are just space wasters these bunch of clowns those not merit our jerseys, but bribery and sentiments will continue to cloud peoples reasoning.Youngest team of the tournament  that couldn’t last ninety minutes. And to that yeye albino coach thanks for betraying us.

Thank u Mr. Rohr for the job u have done, but it is time to go!

We need a more passionate coach with some self belief, not one that keeps complaining that he has a young team that will be ready to take on the world in 2022.

As for u Pinnick, u hav to look out for a new coach if you want to keep your job. The vultures will be calling for your head now, so do the right thing!

  • Like Other Africa teams, we had our chances but failed to convert them.
I think this is a wake call for us and many other teams from Africa, we gave our all but our all wasn’t good enough.

The question is when are we going to learn from our mistakes.

I have also had the coach say on several occasions that we’ve a young team, this a lame excuse and far from the truth as most of our players are well in their late 20s and 30s with exceptions of Ebuehi, TroostEkong and Iwobi.

All in all, the boys gave their all.

  • Bomboy 5 months ago

Why did Bryan Idowu start the game ahead of Ebuehi? The coach is to rigid.

  • Mykel 5 months ago

Ighalo, iheanacho and rohr got us eliminated in this tournament. Going forward, the nff should stop this habit of giving the super eagles money to perform. This team is not good, I did not hear from any media outlet that Argentina was offered money for then to qualify. But in Nigeria, they beg players with dollars and all sorts just to even score a goal. I will recommend genart rohr to be sacked. He has nothing to offer to our football. This was a match that he was supposed to have changed tactics and brought a defender like awaziem to come to that midfield and support the tires players and he stood there looking confused

  • Honestly, I was never against GR before, but this time I will not only blame him but also condemn him,but before i do that:The reason why we lost were as follows:
Firstly,Ighalo was a waster, and unprofessional player,he lacks goal sense,it was same goal Musa score against Iceland that He wasted claiming handball
Secondly,Mikel and Etebo was tired,I was looking at my watch when it was 83 min,i was expecting him to remove both players and bring him Ebuehi and Awazim to defend, after all Mourihno defended 90 min against Barca when he was in Chelsea.A good coach will never loose yesterday Match
Thirdly, the last three man defenders lost concentration, where i was watching the ball,i pointed out that the Argentina man was unmarked before the ball got to him,to me as if our boys were not watching the clocks
Also,Our Goal keeper is inexperience, agree with me Messi Goal,a World Class keeper can still save that Messi goal,i remember Enyeama has saved dangerous ball than that, even the second goal, judging by that we still need a good goal keeper,Uzoho is trying but his inexperience at times cost us
In addition,Victor Moses and Ahmed Musa was a thorn in flesh, and i wonder why blaming him for the second goal, where are the 3 centre players,Moses tried to covered after overlapping.
Conclusion,we should come back home and start to rebuild our team, and we shud still give GR another Opportunity.Thank you

      @ Marvins,
Moses did excellently in the wing back. h kept di Maria ineffective guy blaming him does not like Moses because the Agentine manager boosted that he knows how to handle Moses hich to him is the player that can wreck his side..

    Chydon,
Don’t even worry, we have a team now.other good players will evolve. There is always a process for players to break into team A.the old players are very useful in competitions.hey are the balance and reason why you even have anything to cheer.Check the Germany, Spanish,Croatia, argentina, just to mention.they have been playing since 2010. Untill we are able to reach that level of football maturity ,we cant win world cup.But we have reached the level to move on and win now.The coach should continue to scout and convince the boys with football sense to come in and play for nigeria.

  • isaac 5 months ago

In my Opinion, Rohr should not continue as Coach because he adapts a 3 5 2 defensive formation and his players selection is poor. You cannot expect the wing backs like Moses and Idowu to attack and defend for the entire 90 minutes. Moses did very well but Brian Idowu had no business in that match. The second Argentine goal was scored because we had no leftful back. Ogbuehi played a part in our victory against Iceland. why did the coach him ahead of Idowu again despite his poor showing. No good coach will keep a clinical finisher like Iwobi on the bench. He is far better than Ighalo
