Nigeria Line-Up Vs Serbia: Onazi Back, Ighalo Benched; Uzoho, Idowu Keep Spots

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has kept faith with the trio of Joel Obi, Francis Uzoho and Bryan Idowu to start tonight’s international friendly against Serbia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Ogenyi Onazi, who started the game against Poland on the bench, will be back in the starting line-up. He will be deployed in a three-man midfield alongside Joel Obi and Wilfred Ndidi.

Also expected to start in attack is Ahmed Musa in place of Odion Ighalo, while Kenneth Omeruo replaces the injured Leon Balogun.

There’s also a rare start for Tyronne Ebuehi who replaces the injured Shehu Abdulahi at right-back.

The German tactician also kept faith with Victor Moses and Alex Iwobi on the flanks for the game.

“He (Rohr) keeps people guessing and I think that unpredictability is what stands him out and that could be a good omen for us at the World Cup,” a Super Eagles source told CSN.

The game will  will hold at the Hive stadium in London. Kick-off time is 8pm.

Super Eagles likely line up:

Uzoho

Tyronne, Ekong, Omeruo, Idowu

Joel, Onazi, Ndidi

Musa, Moses, Iwobi.

I thought he will start Ajayi in place of Musa.

  • I like Ighalo style of attacking, especially when he charges his teammates to go on the opponent’s defenders putting them under pressure and creating room for mistakes from the opposing defenders. Please, the team should adopt this model…

Pretty solid line up. we just have to play as a collective and hold/control possession better. I believe the midfield is compact and combative. more than able to match up to Serbia’s midfield with the likes of Matic. Joel Obi will have a big job on his hands as he tries to be the creative force in the midfield. The win is our regardless. Up eagles!!!!!

Hello, this line up is not likely to be from Rohr.
    What does this represent?
A player is missing from this supposed list from the Coach.
Come to think of it, a midfield of heavy Onazi? Musa to start?
    Yawa dey smell..
The backmen are well chosen but this match will further expose our team’s deficiency in attack.
    Rohr has plans..o.
You cannot drop the “key” players from your team without a good justification. When these guys fail tonight there will be reactions from Nigerians calling for thier scalp. I agree.
Musa, Ighalo, Omeruo are a disaster waiting to happen.
It is time bomb @ 8.pm Nigerian time.

nooo! this line up is not ok for me, I don’t trust Omeruo in that back line, Ogu should have started ahead of Onazi and musa has no business in that line up, I would have prefer Ajayi to start so that we can see what he can do, well all the best to the lads, I hope all the player starting today will prove a point

  • Cool down guys… Just a friendly game. Or don’t you guys want to know how your bench will perform in real match???… Give them benefit of doubt… Complain after the match

    • Mike Ode 8 months ago

Abi? This is just a friendly match, haha! Let’s try other players now

  • Raphael 8 months ago

If he always play the usual suspect, then why are they paying him hugely? His a tactician and this is the time to test out all d players to know who is who. Result in this matches are ok but the transition of the team is what matters most, this is a big opportunity for these players to put in a good shift, so that no one will complain when any of them is dropped based on below par performance. GR knows the competition in the team is healthy and anyone called up to play should justify his inclusion into the team. Musa starting as a false 9 will pave the way for Moses and Iwobi to attack directly, and Musa will be handy to finish off rebounds or loose balls same thing he does for his club. Let’s keep our fingers cross and watch as the team roll today.

  • I don’t know why we are complaining, we forget the aim of these friendlies,it’s not about winning it’s called practice match,it’s a match to find faults with the team so as to correct them before the WC ,this is the right time to try some of these players…the scoreline dosent matter..

  • Obruthe ufuoma 8 months ago

My people this na friendly match , the man know his first 11, but we must try other people n pattern to get our set goal . Nice one to see….

  • mutum 8 months ago

fair lineup! if certain players fails to clique tonight will signal there end wit the eagles going to d world cup. idowu, omerou,Joel obi, onazi. onazi is weighty this days, can’t even run n hustle as he used to be.

Ogu should be starting games for this team. However playing club football in Israel has not done him justice.I would be moving club to a better footballing country in Europe if I were him.In my view I think Ogu Ndidi and Mikel are the best midfielders we have in the team.Against Argentina this trio held there own and came out unscathed. The team profited from their proficiency and there was positive flows and vibes which led to the unbelievable result against two time world championships Argentina.I would have started Ogu ahead of Onazi but the gaffer knows best.I can only wish them victory at end ofthe day

@everyone, thanx for presenting your positions which are a source of feedback for the Coaching crew.
I wholeheartedly agree with the position that the Coach is well knowledgeable & knows what he wants.
He is keen on testing his players against strong opposition to determine what his bench should be.
He already knows his starting 11 for the various formations he will be deploying at the WC.
Honestly, I will be pleasantly surprised if this team survives against Serbia.
    This is the Huge Test.
Hahahaha, heads must roll after 90 minutes.
    Rohr, u are the best!

  • Is this not short one? Musa as our main attack weapon? Was Ighalo injured ni? Why not try Ajayi instead. Musa is good, but he’s too profligate in front of goal. His conversion rate is poor, which was his problem at Leicester.

Ighalo needs a competitor for that NO9 shirt and I don’t think it’s Musa or Iheanacho. Happy Ebuehi is starting. Hmm, what happened to Echiejile and Aina after Idowu started against the Argies may happen to Shehu Abdullahi today.

To all the Internet coaches and wanna be coaches, please, watch, listen and learn. Whoever Gernot Rohr has invited to that team is with a reason and purpose. Whatever experience anyone here claims to have in respect of assessment of needs and requirements that will add capacity to and improve the quality of the team cannot be compared to what Gernot Rohr knows.
Each team can make up to five or six changes during the match so there is opportunity for everyone to show why they should be on the plane to Russia.
So, please, let’s stop whining and be positive.

This is just a speculation from the writer of this blog. Why would Rohr play Ndidi with Onazi and joel Obi at d same time? And Musa as Striker abi? You are just joking.
There is a way that seemeth right to a Man but the end is the best way to expose people.

Please Rohr should be rotating players, with Iwobi playing through the middle to add creativity to that midfield. Ogu should also play. (Just my thoughts)

  • Eichie Cletus A. 8 months ago

Musa to play as top 9,good one
He prefer playing as top 9 right from time but has been used from the flanks

  • ISHAQ YAHAYA 8 months ago

THE COACH IS AN EXPERIENCE MAN ,HE KNOWS HIS ONION, BUT I WOULD HAVE PREFER JUNIOR AJAYI AND OKECHUKWU GABREAL FOR THE STARTING LINE UP PLAYING ATTACKING ROLE

  • nemelum 8 months ago

why not just start Ajay let’s see what he can do? I don’t like the thought of seeing musa in the middle. by the way that midfield trio is very deficient.. they are all ball chasing midfielders… none or them is a holding midfielder so they can’t retain the ball. inadvertently we have conceded possession to Serbia witj the hope of hitting on counter. let’s watch and see. omeruo lost my confidence 2 yrs ago.

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 8 months ago

Omeruo will now be exposed for what he really is. He do not belong to be in team.

  • Abdulrazak 8 months ago

Update to SE starting xi vs Serbia. Leon Balogun passes late fitness test and is in the starting xi.
Kenneth Omeruo drops to the bench.

  • Mumitee 8 months ago

This line up is diff from the one I saw on another website, there was no omeruo it was balogun that was in d starting eleven

  • Omo9ja 8 months ago

Oh yeah. This is the kind of coach we need in our national team. Musa will do well. Bonffere jo also did it during his era. He switched Tijani Babangida to striker position and TJ scored 1 against South Africa in Afcon 2000. 1 against Ghana in World cup qualifiers. However, after the Poland match, I knew it right away that coach Rohr is a world class coach. I will like to see Ajayi and the Chans striker to play in today’s match. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Josleck 8 months ago

Thank God all this internet coaches are not our coaches they would have led us to our doom by now. Have you all forgotten this is friendly match which is needed to allow the team, not only the starting 11 but all the squad to gel up together before major tournament. So if you were expecting the same starting 11 one can now estimate your knowledge about football. Frankly speaking I was not expecting victor Moses, Ndidi and iwobi because these guys seems to establish and know what they can offer. As for those saying Junior Ajayi should start ahead of musa, I think GR want to use the worldcup-bound squad before performing any experiment on new guys. But I see Junior Ajayi coming on later to show his stuffs. Whichever the case let’s trust the master tactician

  • Ighalo should be permanently kept out of the team. Bring in Fernando adi, Cyril desser,.pur no 9 needs to be clinical and accurate. To me that’s d only weak point I see after d goal keeper is settled

  • They are not bad at all because every players possess their professionalism and courage in any game

  • Bestsports. 8 months ago

Chuba akpom of Arsenal is a must see. A beauty to watch and be is slinky and skillfull. He will break ighalo balls for our number 9 position. He’s presently on loan to st trident. But plays regularly. An arsenal academy star like iwobi is no joke o. ROHR MUST BE INFORM AT ONCE. QUALITY ADDITION. Watch his highlights and una go see am.

  • Good selection.
    Let’s see what happens.
Don’t forget that we still have 3 friendlies remaining before the world cup.
Let’s support the coach and the team.

All I need today is a good football un-like what we watch the other day

  • Ayphillydegreat 8 months ago

I like the list. The coach is currently weighing up his options ahead of the Mundial. Let’s just watch this team evolve. The result today is inconsequential I just want to see they begin to blend as a team. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

  • Willie 8 months ago

I am not interested in the Super Eagles line up. My concern is: why are their NAMES not on their Jersey?
Poland had their players’ names on their Jersey and All other friendlies going on at the moment.
Please we need to reverse this anomaly immediately.

  • Thise line up ls good for me because it is a friendly mach no wahala
