How Super Eagles Will Line Up Vs England At Wembley

By Semiu Osho in London:

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi will return to Nigeria’s starting line-up for Saturday’s pre-World Cup friendly against The Three Lions of England at the Wembley Stadium here in London, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Mikel missed Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo in Port Harcourt last Monday and the friendlies against Poland and Serbia, but he will lead the Super Eagles out at the iconic Wembley on Saturday.

Also returning to the starting line-up for the game against England after missing the match against DR Congo are the trio of Victor Moses, Odion Ighalo and Bryan Idowu but Wilfred Ndidi, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, will sit out the encounter.

The pair of Joel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi will keep their places in central midfield just as Leon Balogun and William Troost Ekong also retain their places in the heart of the Super Eagles defence.

Shehu Abdulahi will be the starting right-back,, while Francis Uzoho, who has started the last three matches, is expected to keep his place in goal. Alex Iwobi will also start the encounter from the flanks. The Arsenal forward will make his 17thappearance for Nigeria.

    Good selection…

    up naija

  • Ok bit u wil see some changes in d team as d game goes on .at least simy. Etebo. Go come in for some weak legs .

  • Ayphillydegreat 6 months ago

This could easily be the SuperEagles first 11 against Croatia. With one of Joel Obi and Onazi giving way for Ndidi. And possibly Odion giving way for Nwankwo. Otherwise this is a close call for a potential first 11 against Croatia. I’m so glad to see the Obis play together again. Under SiaOne SuperEagles average 3 goals per game when both Obis play together. They could’ve relinquish that partnership in Brazil 2014, but for some dubious reason Joel was unbelievably dropped. His time has finally come and I’m very happy for him. Now he’s got a chance to represent Nigeria at a major competition. In any circumstances whatsoever! there’s always a cause to always give glory to the almighty. He’s got nothing to prove to anyone, I only need him to step up his game a bit and the midfield will be just fine.

    • Tanco 6 months ago

Auphilygreat sir, I think that’s just gonna be our starting 11 and based on your analysis in some of your precious comments I don’t think Joel obi will be dropped to bench when indidi comes back to full fitness rather it will be Onazi that will be dropped to the bench and for simy Nwakwo, I See the lanky forwards starting games for SE at the World Cup proper and this guy may just be our secret weapon

      • Ayphillydegreat 6 months ago

Yes Tanko. You’re absolutely spot on. My ideal midfield trio for the WorldCup proper will be the Obis and Ndidi. I have a feeling that Simy Nwankwo could eventually usurp Ighalo for that sacred number 9 role at the Mundial proper. Ighalo will have to be ridiculously sharp if he wants to be the main striker at the WorldCup. Nwankwo and Kelechi are clipping on his heels. And I won’t blink an eye if he’s benched for either of them.

Well said AY. I equally give kudos to Gernot Rohr and the NFF for the courage to drop Elderson from the starting line up. Its quite evident now that they are only taking him to Russia in order to make up for his inability to make 2014 WC due to injury. Hes now an honorary inclusion and thats fine by me. I have no doubt that after the world cup, no sane coach will ever invite Echiejile again. However we are grateful to him for his past wonderful contributons to our football.

  • Patrick 6 months ago

The Nigerian national team is formidable. The first eleven is okay. The coach must test Simon nkwankwo (simmy).he has the potential to play as our main centre forward during world cup matches.

  • Hmm…Gernot Rohr! The man doesn’t joke with his Selections. If he’s not satisfy with any player,  he won’t try d player.
During the Qualifiers, he didn’t try Ogu until the last Dead match and against Argentina. Even Ebuehi if not that he grabbed the opportunity against Argentina with both hands. Same goes for Henry Onyekuru, Uche Agbo and Eze. Before Ezenwa came to the picture, He was ignored for many matches. Akpeyi will be late for camping then, he will still be in goal until he was injured before Ezenwa could get his chance. Now! Uzoho or Nothing (Poland, Serbia, DR Congo and Now England). What I observe is that Rohr has already chosen Joel Above Ogu and Agu. That’s why he played Poland, Serbia, DR Congo and Now, England. So people should stop calling for his removal! He’s the best we have after Mikel and Indidi.

Great selection, Great coach. Like I said before Joel Obi is the only natural left attacking midfielder that can help compliment our left back just as Victor Moses. Also he plays in dreaded Italian top league and has experience.
With Onazi and the two obis, you have a cracked midfielders.
So, let’s see what we have got against England today.

    where is Simy Nwankwo ?

    • I think Simmy will come on as replacement. And the Czeck match is coming. Trust Rohr to test his weapons before the main battle.

  • Go Eagles, Go 6 months ago

I am still saying it that Ndidi Wilfred will not be fit enough for the rigorous assignments ahead. Rohr just want to compensate him for being an integral part of the team, if not it is just a waste of space. I will be surprised if he plays any match. It will say much on the medical crew. I so much wish he is fit by 2 weeks time. But I am afraid. Let Rohr use his head. We will end up damaging this young man and his place in Leicester if he is desperately forced to play and damage the healing progress so far. I feel for him.

    • Luomo 6 months ago

He will be fit in time for the WC..they are simply following the club’s programme for him..it has already been said his 1st match will likely be against czech..i expect him to start full training when they get to austria

  • balorx 6 months ago

oga ndidi will play.he is fit but the coach doesnt want him to disrupt his rehabilitation process that is why he is nt playing against england.
    my midfield trio: joel,ndidi,mikel obi

  • if you are complaining abt ndidi @ Go Eagles, Wat about salah, Aguero, nayma… ? pls, anybody with negative mind sud leave dis forum alone. 1 Mind, 1 Voice, 1 Goal…….. Soar…. Eagles (The wings of African)

    • chudi 6 months ago

thank you jaye i see real naija blood in you, with one mind we will achieve d same goal. our prayers and support will help our darling eagles than thinking and speaking negative on them,,, any team rohr present to us is our best and we must stand strong to support them. thanks for ur positive comment Jaye,

  • l thank God for Germany Nigeria Coach ,am to watch a better football at Russia

  • The starting 11 looks strong. I also foresee ndidi replacing onazi in the World Cup proper. I believe Tour will remain loyal to ighalo upfront for now till nwankwo displaces him with better performances.
On the makeup of the final 23-man squad, I’m pretty certain Ola Aina will be dropped plus one of Mikel agu/john ogu. I’d prefer Mikel Agu to be dropped but from what I’ve seen thus far, it’s looking more Likely that Rohr will drop off instead.
Nonetheless, I believe the team is a strong and united one. I wish them all the best at the Mundial. Make us proud boys. #Gosupereagles

  • For the eventual selected players to avoid a repeat of the 1:0 outcome of 1994 Wembley friendly, I offer the 5 recommendations below:

1)Be mindful of long balls : England are adept at utilising balls across the box 18 from any direction particularly the fullbacks. Ashley Young, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Trent Alexander-Arnold – all defenders – may not seem like attacking threats but their crosses will cause Eagles problems in transitioning from defence-to-attack. Rohr must develop strategies to neutralise killer crosses.

2)Don’t play high lines: In Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, England will be lethal in counter-attacks. These players will run behind the best defences in the world to deadly effects. Rohr’s Eagles must be defensively compact with wingers falling back regularly to help out with defensive duties.

3)Don’t switch off in set plays: The only goal conceded by Nigeria against England in 1994 came from a cleverly crafted set-play.The English national team practises optimum utilisation of various set play scenarios. Rohr’s Eagles should display maximum concentration always.

4)Defensive aerial prowess: Super Eagles defenders will be tested aerially. They have to be ready to neutralise threats of Harry Kane in the air.

5)Penalties: In players like Dele Alli and Raheem Sterling, England have serial divers. Nigeria have to be mindful not to give away needless penalties.

    Good luck Super Eagles.

  • This squad is very dangerous no team will like to play against this team,we have everyrhing it takes to lift the world cup,up super eagles!up nija

    A good line-up.
    England – Nigeria, 5.15pm.
Our stream of heavy but objective critique on GR and SE is paying massive returns already because crew and players now appear more determined to prove their critics wrong.
    This is positive for Nigeria.
This is the spirit we have advocated against the background of a not too popular list, but not many followed the logic.
Today, things look so so very different!
I remain Super Eagles’ No.1 fan.
Top man Gernot Rohr expectedly is anchoring on “Team Bonding Strategy”, what Nigerians call “team spirit”, a typical German approach most assured & efficient in modern team management models to challenge for success.
Team bonding is simply using same set of disciplined players over long-term with minimal alteration to build team chemistry & synergy.
Team bonding is Germany’s secret code for acquiring perennial international success.
It is a system mostly effective when applied, focusing on tournaments particularly when team seem short of required world star players, or pressume to have none.
The SE may not be highly rated by bookmakers individually but are very strong, unpredictable and dangerous as a unit, and can hurt any team going forward, particularly in Russia.
GR’s men can beat the best teams as currently composed with Mikel, Kele, Iwobi, Simy, Troost, Balogun, Ndidi, Joel, Moses & Etebo as key parameters for success.
If SE would surprise the world it would be on the basis of this approach..
Their strength comes from a combination of factors as physicality, energy, bonding, youthfulness, self-belief, determination, experience & an uncanny thirst for glory.
Then the catalyst effect of a certain Mikel, Rohr & 180 million diehards supporters.
I strongly believe that this team can lift the coveted WC trophy if they set minds to it.
The atmosphere in camp suggests it is a possibility.
Today, we look to see a big-match display from a team determined to reclaim global respect and prove that the crushing defeat handed down to Argentina was not a fluke.
Tonight should be a must win for GR’s men primarily for the psychology of it.
Colonial lords, England are always a cocky side.
They would be imposing & sneaky, employing different tactics to win against their more enterprising guests.
England have not lost at senior level yet to Nigeria and will seek to extend their unbeaten record.
But here is bad news for them; SE will hurt their pride. It is long overdue..
Rohr should instruct his wards to stab the heart of the 3-Lions so badly to inflict mortal wounds on their host team.
It would be difficult to lockdown nibble-footed Ahmed Musa, rampaging new-boy, Simy, Iwobi & Kele from killing off this game with Mikel always on the throttle.
Mikel Obi expectedly should be orchestrating & pulling all the strings.
For once 3-Lions should be made to look very ordinary before their fans in their own backyard.
If Rohr’s tactics would include stampeding the midfield wit five (5) players as his selection shows, to scuttle a likely wave of constant build-ups from Kyle Walker, Maguire or John Stones then victory seems assured.
Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Vardy, Ashley Young, Welbeck, Sterling & Rashford all unpredictable, irrational & dangerous, if fielded certainly would pose the biggest threats.
England is not a high scoring side, but are balanced and do love to take their chances.
However, as long as SE can deploy a battery of wolves in the middle to attack the ball ceaselessly all night & defend in numbers, the conflict will be in Nigeria’s favour.
Tactically, it is a confrontation of wits between Gernot Rohr and Gereth Southgate, his opposite number.
This will be dramatic & explosive.
WC starts tonight for Nigeria, and here, at the prestigous Wembley stadium.
Nigeria need to heat-up this game.
It should be WAR; far from a friendly.
It should rekindle flames of rivalry as never seen in recent times.
Bullish Nigeria badly need a win on which to anchor confidence leading to Croatia’s opening match.
    My Verdict!
    Dicey!
Anything is possible, but SE should soar with Mikel dictating, & Nigeria not too cautious.
The half time substitutions should kill the contest for Nigeria.
    It should be SE’s day..
    England 0-3 Nigeria.
    Long live the SE!

    • I love this…. I think the team should read this before entering the pitch England would be for final whistle

  • I must watch this game, victor moses should score, mike obi i expect to see you shin and iwobi and many others Nigerian 3- England 2

I would have loved to see John ogu partner Ogenyi onazi and make the defensive aspect of the midfield a lot solid…..
Aside that ogu has the capability of shooting from long range and he has long legs.
Hope to see you come on from the bench then, and I see Nigeria all the way later this evening

It’s just a friendly Rohr could be experimenting with fresh formations so the result may come short of expectations.Fans alike should be realistic with expectations.Predicting 3 nil against England is just absurd and disrespectful.England playing at Wembley is not a piece of cake.Nevertheless I expect a good match and a determined performance by the super eagles so whatever result that comes in the end should serve as a learning curve towards a successful tournament in Russia.
    Goodluck super eagles of Nigeria

  • It Will help their confidence if they win well

  • Super Eagles can win by two goal margin the problem for me is Kane and sterling

  • dis are d positive mind will looking for @ leo, not d negative ones. all they know is waiting for failure of team in order for them to brag. mind U (all negative thoughts) we also waiting for you guys. ONE THING IS VERY CERTAIN (either we succeed or…..) UP SUPER EAGLES……

I will advise everyone to calm down on Simy Nwankwo. He is a good striker but whether he is a 90 minutes player is a different story. I see Ighalo starting most games at the world cup but Simy coming in as Super sub. Forget the highlights, everyone looks like Messi in highlights. I have watched Simy so many times for FC Crotone and I know what to expect from him. He has that natural instinct of a striker, very good positioning, good in the air. But his hold up play needs to improve. Except may be the quality of balls played into him at FC Crotone were not that good and may be Super Eagles will play better quality balls into him. I believe Simy will add value to the team but he is not the Messiah everyone thinks he is. Him and Ighalo should share our number 9 responsibilities and I hope when called upon either of them deliver.

  • onwajunior 6 months ago

Great to see all the positive comments. No matter what happens we r solidly behind the Super Eagles. All the players are good and I really feel for Aina bcos unless any defender gets injured he is surely going to be dropped. I have a funny feeling that both Agu and Ogu would go to the World Cup, and that either Omeruo or Awaziem would be dropped. I may be wrong, I’m just trying to figure out what tactics the coach may use i.e. Going to Russia with 8 defenders or going with 7 and an extra midfielder that can be drafted as a defender in need be. But then again Shehu is a midfielder that plays as a defender. In short, I don tire…I want Agu to go but we all know that Rohr likes him.

Nigeria was not disrespectful when they defeated mighty Argentina 4-2. Or, 1-0 against Poland in their Country. But wil be disrespectful because someone thinks they can beat England by 3 goals to nil in London.
Are you an England fan? Sorry oo..
I think the influence of Mikel Obi will be so huge that a 3-0 scoreline might be an underestimation.
Please do not underestimate Nigeria. Our players are also reading these comments. Let them know we believe in their abilities to deliver on the big stage.
Cameroon fell by 4-0 why not England?
    Eagles 3-0 Three Lions.
    Go Naija!

Wilfred ndidi should start ahead of Onazi. I need a 4:3:2:1 formation igahlo up front best of luck eagles!

  • Temitope 6 months ago

my-oh-my! Nigerians with blind optimism, well why won’t we be after all it is our darling SE that are playing but there is a caveat; England are playing at home, a vociferous crowd rooting for their team and 12th player giving them (un)deserve home advantage. Well whatever might be the case I will sit to enjoy the match, sincerely I will prefer SE lost this match like they lost their pre-world cup friendlies in 1998 and later stunned the world so that our opponents won’t really know our strength.

  • Israel Akinlawon 6 months ago

The line up would be fantastic. I believe the two players to be dropped are Ola Aina and Awaziem. It unlikely GR will drop any striker or midfielder again, the defence line would be pruned down to 7 players. I think the formula would be 3-7-7-6 (3 goalkeepers, seven defenders, 7 midfielders and 6 stirkers).

  • o boy what did u think about world cup no be Npfl wo. go eagle go!!!!

  • Let’ watch and see

  • Frankagal 6 months ago

Well done my people for all your positive comments on our SE.It clearly shows how patriotic we are as Nigerians.
However,I would like to advise that we must not see this game as a ‘must win’ match because the coach might be using it to test formations and confirm the players he has chosen in his starting 11.So,for me,what matters most in today’s match is,team cohesion not result.
Finally,I would have loved to see a natural support striker like Iheanacho starting with Ighalo to give us more scoring options because our chances of scoring against well organised defences Will be very slim with a sole striker.
I strongly believe that this team has all it takes to win the Russia 2018 because GR has made an objective team selection based on current club form and not on big names as we used to have in the past. The only ingredient the players need now is to ‘believe that they can conquer the world’.Goodluck SE.

  • Idahosa 6 months ago

Nigeria will win today’s friendly 3-1

  • GR told the English media in an interview that his WC starts with the match against England today which he wants a result from.
He has pledged to use his strongest team and believes his team would win today’s contest.
The win is crucial to the team heading to the world cup.
The players are confident they would outscore and beat England.
One problem I find in open commentary platforms is that some contributors don’t follow developments to make inform opinions.
If GR and his players so believe England would be beaten today, it tells us that they know what we don’t know.
I believe they wil flog England silly today.
    Rohr 4 – 0 Southgate.
