Hughes Questions Saints’ Nous

Southampton boss Mark Hughes has admitted his side might lack the “nous” to get over the line in games after their draw with Brighton. The Saints found themselves two goals to the good at St Mary’s on Monday night, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Danny Ings (pen) giving the hosts the advantage on the south coast.

However, Southampton collapsed and Shane Duffy and Glenn Murray (pen) both found the back of the net in a dramatic finish to see the spoils shared.

Hughes has admitted the result was a tough one to take and has conceded that perhaps his side currently lack that know-how to get over the line in tight encounters.

“We went into the game wanting to win – we wanted back-to-back results. It wasn’t to be. We got into a winning position and maybe didn’t have the nous to make sure we kept the margin at 2-0,” he said.

“Brighton had nothing to lose and threw people forward and got balls into our area and it’s about the percentages. You just hope you can defend those percentages.”
