–AFN bungles quartermiler’s chance of winning IAAF World Indoor medal
By Dare ESAN:
What is wrong with your AFN?(AthleticsFederation of Nigeria)? Why did they bungle Regina George’s chances of making a piece of history at the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Indoor Championships in Poland,”asked Paulycarp, a concerned athletics buff who called me on phone from Canada last week.
Paulycarp was obviously refering to George’s miraculous no-show in the semi-finals of the 400m event at the event in Sopot after posting the fastest time in the first round and was considered one of the huge favourites for a podium appearance.
‘Isn’t it better to call them Athletics Federation of Neophytes,’asked Paulycarp rhetorically.
Many athletics buffs have refused to believe the lies by the AFN that the girl had cramps and had to stay out of the event.
A report in Vanguard Newspapers last week about the AFN’s inability to renew George’s
Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) before the championships was confirmed to CT&FM by
several decent sources within the AFN.
The Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) process is a means by which an athlete can obtain
approval to use a prescribed prohibited substance or method for the treatment of a
legitimate medical condition.
Athletes may have illnesses or conditions that require them to take particular
If the medication an athlete is required to take to treat an illness or condition happens to fall under the Prohibited List, a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) may give that athlete the authorization to take the needed medicine.
George is reportedly suffering from an ailment which requires that she, through the federation gets a TUE to give her the freedom to run without the far of failing a drug test.
This the AFN did not do and the board of the federation has shifted the blame on its
secretariat who has a new secretary general who may not have been informed of the situation. The federation’s anti-doping committee is obviously existing only in name while the technical department is headed by a dilletante who obviously is neither a coach, an ex-international nor a sports scientist as the dictate of the position demands.
