Alex Iwobi made his first start in pre-season for Arsenal under new boss Unai Emery as the Gunners annihilated Paris Saint Germain 5-1 in Saturday’s International Champions Cup (ICC) clash played at the New Singapore National Stadium reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
The win was the first for Arsenal in the ICC after they were beaten in a penalty shootout by Atletico Madrid in their opening International Champions Cup match and their second in three pre-season games.
The Gunners had spanked Boreham Wood 8-0 in their first club friendly game.
Mesut Ozil gave Arsenal the lead after 13 minutes before Christopher Nkunku drew PSG level on the hour mark from the spot. Substitutes Alexandre Lacazette bagged a brace while Rob Holding and Edward Nketiah were also on target in the win.
The former German international who was handed the captain’s armband in his first appearance of pre-season side-footed in Pierre Emerick Aubameyang cutback pass from six yards out.
Iwobi almost got on the scoresheet in the 23rd minute when he latched on to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s pass but his shot was tipped over for a corner by Gianlugi Buffon.
Arsenal had a goal ruled out for offside a minute later when Aubameyang, finished off a pass from Mkhitaryan six yards out with a back heel flick. The Gabonese was adjudged to have been in an offside position.
Iwobi was replaced at the start of the second half by Lacazette. The French striker made an instant impact poking home Smith Rowe’s cross from the right flank in the 67th minute.
Lacazette made 3-1 in the 71st minute heading home from close range.
Rob Holding scored Arsenal’s fourth goal with a header from 14 yards out before Nketiah sealed the win in additional time.
Arsenal will face Chelsea in their next International Champions Cup (ICC) game on Wednesday.
The Gunners will kick start their new season in the English Premier League with a home clash against Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.
