Ighalo: Why I Struggled Against Croatia; Argentina Game Will be “War”

By James Agberebi:

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has revealed reasons why he struggled in the Super eagles 2018 World Cup opening group game 2-0 loss to Croatia and vowed that the final group game against Argentina on Tuesday will be a ‘war’ between both countries.

After failing to perform against Croatia in the Super Eagles opening game, Ighalo started from the bench in the win against Iceland but the China-based striker has put it down to the tactical formation employed in the game.

Ighalo praised Gernot Rohr for making use of two strikers against Iceland.

“It makes it easier because I was isolated (against Croatia) – alone with four different guys – which was very difficult but we played with two strikers (against Iceland), which is much easier for the strikers to move, to come, and you can see that we got goals,” he said.

The Super Eagles revived their World Cup campaign with an impressive 2-0 win against Iceland on Friday and must now avoid defeat against Argentina to qualify for the round of 16.

On the other hand, Argentina must beat the Super Eagles and hope Croatia avoid defeat against Iceland who they could only draw 1-1 against.

Croatia top the group on six points, the Super Eagles are second on three points while Iceland and Argentina are both on one point and are third and fourth respectively.

“It’s going to be war (and) a final of finals because they need to win,” Ighalo told BBC Sport.

“They are going to come all out and (use) every tactic that they know to win a game.”

Ighalo however tipped the Super Eagles to qualify for the knockout stage.

“I am expecting it to be a very tough game but I think we are capable of qualifying.”

Ighalo has no business with Argentina ‘ s game, he should remain on the bench for now.

  • Mr.Ighalo, did you know how this article concerning you was slow to generate any comments?

It is because most fans here are not happy with you AT ALL.

They invested a lot of faith in you and to them, their investments have yeilded zero returns (quite literally).

But I still believe in you. Like we say in Yoruba: “it cannot be that bad for a person that no one on earth will like him/her”.

So, for the few of us who think your goal scoring abilities is a proposition still worth investing in, I suggest you rediscover your mojo and start repaying our investment with healthy returns or else, you will have no other fans left!!!!

Who is fooling who between coach Rohr and Mr.Ighalo?

“After failing to performe against Croatia in the Super Eagles opening game, Ighalo started from the bench in the win against Iceland but the China-based striker has put it down to the tactical formation employed in the game”.

I don’t want to sound rude to you Mr. Ighalo. You had so many opportunities to redeemed yourself but you wasted it.

During the world cup qualifiers if I may ask, how many games did you play and how many shorts you had on target and how many goals you scored for your Country? Just “ONE GOAL” in total right?

If that was the only goal the team Nigeria had for the whole world cup qualifiers, would you be in Russia by now?

You did not deserve to be in that squad but the only thing that making me happy for you is that you have accomplished you goal for been in world cup and you even played at the same world cup. You should thank your God.

However, I love you so much and I think you have a good attitude but In terms of football, you have tried your best and leave the rest for Simy and co.

Against Argentina, you should remain on the bench and other strikers will get the job done for us.

For Mr. Rohr, you are a father, not even an ordinary father but a great father to your team. Now, you have done your part for Ighalo and he (Ighalo) have tried his best.

However, this is the time coach Rohr needed to separate boys from men.
From now on, he should build on the formation 3-5-2 and the team that he used against Iceland.

Idowu must be on the bench also if the coach really have to win against Argentina. We don’t want to see a slow side of the Super Eagles on Tuesday in the first half. Ebuehi must replaced Idowu.

A win against Argentina is not negotiable and get your tactics right sir. In sha Allah, we are winning against Argentina. France awaiting us. This is good for Nigeria because is like we going to play against an Africa team and this is what coach Rohr have been waiting for. He said idea Germany or France, he would prefered one of the two. Also, France kicked us out of the last world cup in Brazil.

Same round of 16. Oh wow, this year world cup is interesting. Up Super Eagles. God bless us all. God bless Nigeria!!!

Ighalo has been given a chance severally, and he has not really impressed. He was not played, and the team played better. It will be too risky to give him a starting chance at a crucial stage like this. Maybe he should start from the bench, at the tail end.

If Ighalo play on Tuesday, Nigeria deserves to go home. In his last 8 Games, he could not find the net, how he is going to so now against a wounded Lion like Argentina who is seeking to redeem its image at the expense of Nigeria. Ighalo did not get to Russia on merit. Tell the Nigerians the contribution Ighalo has made ever since he was first introduced into the Nigeria soccer arena????????? Let repeat myself. Ighalo did not get Russia based on his merits.

Ighalo is very correct about his inactivity due to Rohr tactics in the first match. However with the new tactics, Ighalo can deliver.

  • i saw u bribing d coach Ror after d second goal,,, whyyyyyyyy Ighalo dis is ur last game 4 9ja! U don fall ur hand.

See Ighalo trying to be strategic…e no go work. You need to be on the bench and not even come in because we have Simy. Abeg coach Rohr don’t be deceived oh, this guy is not worth it.

  • Nigeria is surrounded by French speaking countries. The French say: “On ne change pas l’equip qui gagne” ===> One does not change a winning team. Mr Rohr, the next match is very critical. We don’t want excuses. Stick with the boys who will get the job done – no sentiments. We want fast paced players like Musa, Iheanacho, Ebuehi. Igalo is too slow, heavy and unproductive. Without mincing words, Igalo should not come near our jersey, otherwise we’ll likely crash out against Argentina. Argentina must fall.

  • very funny! ighalo you have been giving so many opportunities in this team!but u have failed.. if u had started the game against Iceland you won’t have scored any goal. u have passed ya best form. u don’t have impact in this team anymore! look at ya performance against Iceland u had a one on one chance what happened? sorry sir u are a floop and don’t deserve dat no9 Jesse or being in the team. the coach or tactical formation is no reason. u were selected to make an impact but u failed.. ya last world cup!! lucky you!!

Let’s be candid here. A change in formation actually gave the victory against the Iceland..
However, in previous matches, a lone striker has been used and I can say this has brought a drought in goal scoring of the super Eagles..
Who will believe Musa will play so beautiful on Friday and also score those fabulous goals? I clamored for his removal in the first half but, he did wonders in the second half.
Although ighalo had not been in scoring form but, Musa is not dependable either…
    I wish them good luck.
