Iheanacho Dropped Again As Man City Cruise Into 2nd Place

By James Agberebi:

Manchester City closed the gap on leaders Chelsea to eight points following their 2-0 win against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Monday night.

A goal in each half from Raheem Sterling and an own goal by Tyronne Ming off a Sergio Aguero strike sealed the win for City who are now second on the log.

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho was once again left out of City’s squad, his fifth straight exclusion. The Nigerian has been oit of favour since the arrival of Gabriel Jesus in January.

City had the game’s first real chance through Sterling in the ninth minute but he couldn’t finish off Fernandinho’s long pass.

In the 14th minute City were forced into an early change as Gabriel Jesus went off injured and was replaced by Sergio Aguero.

Bournemouth went close to opening the scoring on 19 minutes but Willy Caballero was quick to come off his line and stop Jordon Ibe from getting to the ball first.

Bournemouth were also forced to make an early change as Simon Francis went off injured on 23 minutes with Tyrone Mings taking his place.

City had the best chance of the game on 26 minutes but Sterling was unlucky to see his goal-bound strike come off a Bournemouth player and hit the post before Kevin De Bruyne’s follow-up was blocked for a corner.

City eventually took the lead on 28 minutes thanks to Sterling who pounced on Leroy Sane’s deflected low cross.

Bournemouth thought they had equalised right from the restart but Josh King was adjudged to have pulled back John Stones’ shirt.

In the second half Bournemouth came all out for the equaliser but couldn’t break down City’s defence line.

And after weathering the early onslaught from the hosts, City doubled their lead on 68 minutes as who slipped Sterling’s low cross past Artur Boruc via a Mings deflection.

City should have extended their lead in the 83rd minute but Sane’s shot inside the area came off the crossbar.

Three minutes later Boruc produced a superb save, denying Aleksandar Kolarov who hit a powerful drive.

Sane should have added a third goal for City following a counter but his strike narrowly missed the target.
