Iheanacho Eager To Face “Idol” Messi, Rates Nigeria’s World Cup Group “Most Difficult”

By David Meshioye:

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho says he cannot wait to achieve his age-long dream of facing his childhood idol Lionel Messi when Nigeria clash with Argentina in Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The Leicester City star also hopes Nigeria beat the Albiceleste this time around, having lost to the Argentines in 1994, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

“I love it so I’m proud to be playing for my country and to wear the green, white, and green because it’s something everyone wishes to do, to play for their country,” Iheanacho told Leicester Mercury.

“I hope we get something against them and he’s going to play, so it’s going to be something good, a memory to play against Messi. He’s one of my idols as I look up to him.

“He’s so many people’s idol in the world, he’s a player you like to play with, to learn something, of course, so I will be happy to play against him.

“Of course, after 90 minutes, we’ll see what happens and hopefully we’ll get something.”

Nigeria are in the same group as Croatia, Iceland and Argentina, and Iheanacho is not expecting an easy ride in Russia.

“It’s a difficult group,” Iheanacho added. “I think the most difficult if you ask me, but people will think it is not the most difficult.

“It’s going to be a tough group because all the countries are strong and trying to get something as well.

“The countries, they are not messing around, they are strong countries so everyone will be strong and looking to get points to go through to the next round.”

The article forgot to mention 2002, where Nigeria also lost 0-1. 5 meetings, 5 losses… Doesn’t look good.
