Iheanacho Targets First EPL Goal Of The Season Vs Southampton

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, is looking to score his first English Premier League goal of the season when Leicester City face Southampton at the Saint Mary’s Stadium on Saturday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The 21 year old forward is expected to return to the Foxes starting line-up following Jamie Vardy’s suspension. Vardy was sent off in Leicester City’s 2-0 win over Wolves last Saturday.

The Nigeria foward will also be hoping to make his 70th appearance in the EPL since he made his debut in the league for Manchester City, replacing Raheem Sterling in their 2-0 win over Watford at the Etihad in 2015.

The Nigerian has scored three goals against the Saints since his debut and will be aiming to bag his fourth against Mark Hughes side.

Leicester City are eight in the EPL standings after two round of matches.

  • I am glad that respected writer James Sharpe who covers Leicester City football club corroborates my assessment that James Maddison is one of the threats facing Iheanacho’s starting 11 position at Leicester.

The midfielder can be deployed as a further-forward attacking midfielder playing so close to the main striker that he could be taken for a support striker (a role Iheanacho has played for Leicester before).

If Sharpe continues to deliver and Okazaki returns back to the team, it will be interesting times for the Nigeria international.

Upon signing the Englishman, Sharpe wrote on leicestermecury.co.uk on 20 June 2018:”Puel has been searching for the right creative player to fit into his system behind Jamie Vardy.

The Frenchman used Shinji Okazaki, Demarai Gray, Fousseni Diabate, Kelechi Iheanacho and Riyad Mahrez in the No.10 role at stages last season.”

That said, now that Vardy is suspended, it is hoped that Kelechi will seize this opportunity to bang in some goals as he is widely expected to lead the line in Vardy’s absence.
