Ikhana Salutes ‘Fantastic’ Super Falcons On AWC Win

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Former Super Falcons coach Kadiri Ikahna has hailed the Nigeria’s women football national team for their title-winning feat on Saturday at the 2014 African Women Championship in Namibia.

Edwin Okon’s team defeated the Lionesses of Cameroon 2-0 at the Sam Najuoma Stadium, Windhoek, to claim the title for the seventh time since the start of the Championship in 1998.

Ikhana was in charge of the team two years ago in Equatorial Guinea when the team lost their crown to the host country. The Nigerians were beaten in the semi-finals stage by South Africa.

IKhana spoke gleefully to Completesportsnigeria.com after the game, paying tribute to the team.

“The performance of the team was fantastic in the final against Cameroon. The concern was their opponents would be too physical to upset the Falcons players but obviously that did not faze our girls.

“The only thing I want them to work on ahead of the World Cup in Canada next year is to ensure that they work as a team. I saw plenty of individual brilliance but I feel they can improve their collective game as a unit,” Ikhana observed.

Nigeria, Cameroon and Cote d’ Ivoire will represent Africa at the 2015 FIFA Women World Cup in Canada.

The duo of Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala won the Highest Goal Scorer of the Championship and Most Valueable Player of the Championship prize respectively. Oparanozie scored five goals while Oshoala had four goals to her credit.

The 2015 FIFA Women World Cup holds between June 6 to July 5.

The Falcons players are thus guaranteed the sum of $17,000 each for winning the Championship courtesy of the Nigeria Football Federation.
