Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has tipped the Flying Eagles for the semi-finals of this year’s U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
Speaking as a guest analyst on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football, Ikpeba praised the team for the brand of football they play.
“Expectation is very high, but it can be dangerous too,” Ikpeba stated. “I think so far this lads have been fantastic, there is continuity from the lads that won the U-17 World Cup two years ago which shows Manu Garba has been doing a great job.
“One thing about this team is the kind of football they’ve been playing. One cannot stop admiring them for it, with the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Muhammed who are experienced.
“I don’t want them to be tagged as the team that will go and win the U20 World Cup because it is going to be difficult, but with what I have seen of the team, they can get to the last four.”
Ikpeba however advised Garba to learn from the 1987 Flying Eagles squad that looked promising ahead of the tournament but crashed out in the group stage.
“Manu Garba should learn from the Chile 1987 squad because they came with a lot of promise but it was a disaster. So what I am trying to say is, if they can be focused, and don’t get carried away, they will do well.”
