Anderson Makes Winning ATP Bow

Kevin Anderson defeated Dominic Thiem in straight sets to make a winning start to his ATP Tour Finals debut at London’s O2.

The 32-year-old South African qualified for the end-of-season showpiece for the first time courtesy of his sixth place in the world rankings, boosted in large by his run to the final at Wimbledon in the summer where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

And, after breaking his Austrian opponent early on in the opening set to go 3-1 ahead, Anderson managed to keep his nose in front to take the first set.

The second set was an even affair with neither managing to find a service break so it had to be settled on the tie-break, which Anderson claimed with an ace on his fourth match point to seal a 6-3 7-6 victory.

Roger Federer faces Kei Nishikori in the evening game in the Lleyton Hewitt group, while the Guga Kuerten group, which includes Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Marin Cilic and John Isner gets underway on Monday.
