Swansea forward Joel Asoro has revealed he turned down the chance to sign for Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Asoro was one of a number of players to leave Sunderland in the off season following the club’s relegation to League One and there were a number of sides interested in acquiring his services.
Premier League outfit Spurs were one of the most high-profile clubs that held talks with the Sweden Under-21 international, whilst several Championship teams were also in the mix.
In the end, the 19-year-old, who has made five Championship appearances this season, decided to sign for Swansea because of the increased playing time he would be seeing at the Liberty Stadium.
“We sat talking to Tottenham and they said they could not promise anything about playing time,” he told Swedish newspaper Sportbladet. “Then I felt I could not make that choice. If I want to compete seriously while playing for the under-21 national team, I need to play in my club team.”
