Wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow is working hard on both his ‘primary skills’ as he bids to fight his way back into the England Test side. Bairstow was forced to sit out the first Test against Sri Lanka with an ankle injury, with Ben Foakes, who went on to make a century, stepping into the fold.

That was enough to keep Foakes in the side for the second Test even when Bairstow was fit, and the Yorkshireman now faces a huge fight to get back in.
When asked whether his best chance of getting back into the side was as a specialist batsman, He said: “You don’t want to accept that. You don’t know what’s round the corner. You don’t know how make-up of sides work, or how injuries happen.”
Bairstow says he is work hard to force his way back in and is fully aware of how quickly things can change. “The last two and a half years I’ve been in the team and it was only three Tests ago I was in the top 10 batters in the world. And then you are not playing,” he added.
